Possibly as many close games in the first round as I can remember. An OT game, Ashland wins on a last second fg. Really competitive games for the first week of the playoffs

Minnesota State with a big upset - bit of a rivalry forming between these two.

I had them written off with 3:11 left to go. With 1:00 left we had a football game and with 0:00 left the underdog moved on.

Great finish. Well worth the $10.

Six out of twelve games were upsets. That seems like a sign of things to come in the FBS :)

And here I was thinking, maybe it's better to not have a bi-week.

I'll probably make an appearance at Augustana for that game - while it's not ideal seeing a conference matchup, I do appreciate that I don't have to drive far to see Minnesota State.

Probably be my last football game of the year, unless Augustana goes super deep I guess and get a home game with not terrible weather.

Harding @ Pittsburg - have 3 NCAA titles between these two. They have played once before and that was a first round playoff offensive fireworks show in 2014. Probably a little lighter scoring affair this time but should still be a nailbiting classic

Ouachita Baptist @ Central Oklahoma - GAC and MIAA conference champions going at it in the first round, kind of a shame. 5th meeting all time, none since 1999, first playoff matchup.

Indianapolis @ Grand Valley - first playoff matchup in the 25th all time matchup. Indy hasn't been tested all season, will be interesting how they fair.

Lenoir-Rhyne @ West Alabama - two solid teams that probably have gone under the radar due to the losses to other higher ranked teams. Winner is going to have a real opportunity for a shot at the SR2 title game. 3rd matchup between, 2018 last time, and first playoff matchup.

Bemidji @ Angelo - Bemidji proved themselves the last 3 games against solid opponents to get a playoff bid, Angelo after starting with two tough road losses has been streaking towards their playoff bid. Two hot and good teams, they met in the second round of the 2022 playoffs in their only matchup.

Virginia Union @ Wingate - CIAA and SAC conference champions, both played title games last week and avenged earlier losses. Now they face off for the right to advance. 3rd time playing each other, last time was in opening round of 2022 playoffs.

East Stroudsburg @ California (PA) - Conference opponents but in different divisions so only the 11th overall matchup between the two. Second playoff matchup when they played to a 28-28 tie in 1968.

Minnesota St @ Augustana - More conference opponents, these two much more familiar with each other. This will be the 56 matchup between the two Minnesota holding a 28-27 all time lead. This will only be the second playoff matchup but the second year in a row as they met last year with Augustana winning in a home match.

Central Washington @ Western - 2nd matchup ever and second matchup in consecutive years in the opening round of the playoffs.

New Haven @ Slippery Rock - this will be the 8th matchup between the two with The Rock winning the last 4 to have a 4-3 all-time lead. This is a rematch in the postseason from opening game of the season with the Rock prevailing in September.

Carson-Newman @ Miles - This is a first time matchup between these two teams. Miles winning the SIAC probably lifted them to the 4 spot to host this game. Their losses are by 1 to West Alabama and and FCS team.
Ashland @ Charleston is missing. Should be a good one, first ever matchup and features a Charleston O that dominated a weak MEC vs. a strong Ashland D.

    .
I was at that game in '68. Cloudy, fall day on wooden bleachers watching a game on a chewed up grass field. ESSC (state college) was heavily favored over hometown CSC. The WARRIORS lived up to their reputation and led three time by 14 (14-0, 21-7, 28-14) but in the end, with the score tied at 28 all, it came down to an attempted flea flicker from the CAL 45. The.play started perfectly and
CAL's defense was completely fooled leaving the ES tight end wide open on the left side 10 yard line. The pass arched beautifully heading directly to the receiver's hands and......right between his fingers at the 5 yard line. That young man fell on his face in the process and I swore he laid there for 30 seconds. Probably not, but he certainly didn't want to return to his sideline.
CAL ran out the clock and we celebrated our 28-28 victory.

That's definitely the biggest game but if the game gets out of hand early one way or the other, I expect there'll be an upset brewing somewhere that we'll be able to turn to. Plus there's scouting of possible future opponents, so it'll be a lot to see on Saturday.

Kutztown @ California (PA) - PSAC Championship and 1 seed in region one on the line

West Florida @ Valdosta - GSC title on the line, West FL may need the win to make the playoffs

Ouachita Baptist @ Henderson - loser is for sure missing the playoffs.

Emporia @ Central Oklahoma - neither of these teams have played well the last few weeks. and the MIAA conference has been a wild ride so I expect this one to match the season

Arkansas Tech @ Harding - Harding is playing for the #1 seed or missing the playoffs altogether, pretty big difference for them depending on the outcome of this one.

Pittburg @ Northwest Missouri - one of the biggest rivalries in D2. After last week debacle Pitt is playing for their playoff lives while NW would love to prevent that and finish the season strong.

Virginia St @ Virginia Union - rematch from last week with the CIAA title and playoff spot on the line

Pueblo @ Chadron - A mismatch on paper and Pueblo has won something like 14 straight vs the Eagles but the Chadron defense has kept them in close games vs the top of the RMAC all year. Pueblo playing for the outright RMAC title which they have not won in a decade, and top seed in SR4.
Pueblo is still the sleeper in D2 despite the close loss to Grand Valley. I am going back to sleep now.
