I know it won't happen, but...
You could create an entirely new D1 conference with just California schools that have either dropped football or never had it.

Yeah. CFB in CA is an entire rabbit hole, but I have a wish list of schools that I'd like to see start/restart football. Los Angeles, Fullerton, UCSB... It's a dream, I guess haha

Imagine a Big West resuming football: Bakersfield, Fullerton, Northridge, Cal Baptist, Long Beach, Irvine, Riverside, Santa Barbara.
And a WCC: Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, St Mary's, U San Diego, Cal-San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara. One mega conference or two smaller ones.

That would be a dream! College football at Pepperdine sounds wonderful, gorgeous campus.

D2 could have possibilities - Humboldt, Pomona, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dominguez Hills, San Bernardino, Merced - then add a couple more CSUs to get up to nine and bring APU back for ten.

Obviously it'll never happen, but it's fun to think about. Dominguez Hills has a former NFL stadium on campus, LA and Humboldt both have strong prior history... would be fun.

You mean non D1 NCAA programs. There are plenty of those.

Both - like I'd like for Fullerton and UCSD to get football, - but yeah, DII/DIII/NAIA is what I really want to grow.

              • A D2 team canceling a season is nothing new (it happens most often with low-participation sports like lacrosse) but it's a bit jarring to see it with Mount Olive field hockey, which just two years ago went 15-2. It looks like the coach who built the program left after last season and they didn't hire a replacement until May, with the result that they apparently don't have any players.

When I collected field hockey schedules for my site, they didn't have one up, but I didn't think much of it because they were still on other SAC teams' schedules so I had a more-or-less full schedule for them. Now they've been removed from those schedules.

California has 11 (if I counted correctly) D1 football programs, including 7 FBS. That's actually not bad for a single state.

Yeah, true. I'd just like to see Fullerton have football haha.

And if Cal State (comma) Sacramento's president and AD weren't complete morons who couldn't organize a one-car parade, there's a very good chance that (C)SUS - who nearly shocked Nevada (comma) Reno today... the week after "narrowly" losing to South Dakota State 20-3 - would've been part of FBS in a couple of years.

Also, UC Davis will be moving up to FBS and play football in the MW joining their Oly sports there later. But it's two years out at the earliest because they still have work to finish on the stadium and various other athletic facilities. I saw their AD interviewed on the Big Mountain podcast earlier this summer. He didn't come right out and say it but he alluded to it several times. He reminded me of the wink, wink, nudge, nudge sketch on Monty Python's Flying Circus. So Davis will eventually replace Fresneck as our top in-state football rival. We'll still be playing Fresneck in some OOC games but not every year like we've done for a long time. Screw them and the other four traitors to the MW.

Ohio has 10. 8 FBS and 2 FCS. Although you would be hard pressed to find anybody that knows Dayton has a football team, except maybe Jon Gruden. Surprisingly though, he isn't the most famous coach who played for the University of Dayton. That honor goes to Chuck Noll.

I remember when Fullerton had football, and so did Northridge. Even Santa Barbara had it for a few years.

Pennsylvania is the inverse with 11- 3 FBS and 8 FCS. That's in addition to 16 D2 and 23 D3 programs.
