Yet - you and I would probably agree that allowing the two to play each other would be quite ridiculous. This means you and I both have a standard somewhere for what is acceptable and what isn't, mine is just a lot more strict. You and I would probably also agree that UJ isn't a good fit for the NSIC - because they won't be competitive. I just apply the same scrutiny to DI.

Being that DI is at the top of the pyramid, I do believe it should be reserved for the "best of the best" - however that gets defined. Same goes for MLB, NFL, NHL, High School - I love hockey, but not wanting AHL teams to play in the NHL doesn't mean I don't think the AHL "doesn't matter." I don't want to watch Minneota play Eden Prarie either - but I don't think Minneota shouldn't have sports just because they can't compete against Eden Prairie, nor do I believe Minneota isn't worth watching and can't have a quality exciting game. It's just not against the big time programs.

I think we got a bit robbed on Saturday - the Gophers should have been incentiviezed to schedule a better opponent, and NWS should have scheduled one they could have competed against. Instead of two quality football games, we got one that - frankly I hope nobody bothered to watch.

2 - I'm not a basketball fan at all beyond checking in on SMSU - so I'm probably not the best person to comment on this, but it seems to me like a lot of those upsets typically just get blown out in the next game or two and then the rosters transfer, effectively nullifying the chance that school has of making anouther run. It's hard for me to invest in mid major sports when the athletes themselves don't really seem to want to be there. Also kind of makes me wonder if there aren't better teams that didn't make the tournament only because they didn't get a weak conference's autobid.

As you can tell I'm not an overly emotional person when it comes to this stuff haha. It's part of the reason why I like hockey - there's not a whole lot of appealing to the weaker teams like in basketball, which makes the upsets far more interesting when they happen.

I do think a 300-team tournament would be kind of cool though - that way the better teams aren't forced to sit at home in lieu of weaker teams, and everyone has an equal chance to prove themselves

3 - Yeah, technically - but seeing some of the schools that get invites - it's not really a great barrier in my opinion. Really has nothing to do with competitive viability anymore and only about quick paydays, and we're starting to see it in the quality of what's being presented.

All that said - I'm not opposed to upward mobility, nor am I opposed to interdivisional matchups on the face of it. I just think the current system we have is broken. There isn't a single DII team nationally that would provide anything to DI, just like I don't think there's a single DIII/NAIA team in MN/ND/SD/IA that would provide anything to the NSIC. I just think there needs to be a better system for segmenting schools so we get better quality products across all divisions.
Man I do love a good hearted debate, that has no real stakes and doesn't fly off the handle.

I think we are more alike than you know, just like most debates these days. Just different ways to approach it, and what we each feel is entertainment.

Thanks for the feedback. There is no great answer for sure, It would be great if we could restart college athletics and clear away some of the mysticism of these older larger schools that have no true desire to compete at the top level. Make everyone earn their way back to the top.

Yeah for sure! I enjoyed it.

For what it's worth - I don't think we're that different. I'm realizing lately how detached online communication can be - but if we were discussing in person, we'd be getting along just fine as people (not that this discussion went off the rails or anything, don't mean it like that).

I think there's a lot of common ground in what we've been posting about here too - we may disagree on some of the details, but I don't think either of us want to water down college sports. And I totally agree, I wish we could build it up differently than it has been, and it's a bummer the cat is out of the bag.

      • In NC it was announced today that Elon University and Queens University (which recently moved up from D2) will be merging. It appears that Elon will be the surviving school, but current Queen's students will graduate with their Queens degree.

I wonder if the costs associated with the move to D1 played into this decision. Also, Elon has been working to establish a presence in Charlotte, so this makes a lot of sense from their perspective.

I've heard that both schools are keeping their athletics. I wonder how long that will continue since Elon is taking over.

I can't imagine that will last long, especially considering that Queens is about to be on an island with no close travel partners in the ASUN.

Who knows, maybe with the continued downgrading of the CAA maybe Elon could force the CAA to offer Queens an invite in the event they do keep Queens open as a separate school with their own teams.

I'm sure the 35+ million dollar negative in the revenue over the past five years hasnt helped either

Yeah, with only about 1,600 total students it's a little hard to figure out a game plan to come back from that.

It's still baffling to me that they thought the D1 move was a good idea. I guess they were banking on a lot of money games.

                • There is something so weird to me about these schools the same size as my high school trying to compete in d1 athletics while there are d2 schools like GV with enrollments in the 5 digits comfortable in d2

I could name at least a dozen D1 schools that absolutely have no business being at that level.

And with a little work on the old Google - I could push that to 75-80, easily.

Yeah, and I find it odd when these types of moves are celebrated. There's no real benefit to going DI for most of these schools, their heads are just in the clouds.

They could stay where they could realistically compete and invest in that level, foster rivalries and boost campus engagement - but they'd rather toss millions at never competing for anything meaningful just for the chance to be seen on TV once or twice a year.

                            I couldn't agree more.

I saw your post and Sacramento State was the first one to come to mind. LOL

Start with all the ones east of the Mississippi, especially in the northeast. Probably more suited for D3 than D1 or D2. Saint Francis PA figured that one out.
