I mean what else is there to do in the winter in South Dakota?!?!? But that state is more interesting than North Dakota.

Not much - the further west from I-29 one goes, the less there is to do. It's the opposite on the other half of the state - the further east one goes from the Black Hills, the less there is.

Sadly all people hear is D1. Yet there are a number of D1 programs that could not beat many D2 programs, in a variety of sports. Even some Power 4 schools have lost to D2's in exhibition men's hoops (Ohio State lost to Findlay, KWC beat Louisville). Now I don't know if the top D2 football teams could beat a Power 4 school, but I know they can beat a number of FCS schools.

Agreed. I think the P4 would easily beat any D2 school, but the top end of D2 would be surprisingly competitive against many FCS schools.

I do love the Black Hills! Very nice region. And agreed. Between Mitchell and Rapid City there is nothing!

I struggled with that a lot when I moved here - I'm not really the homebody type, and not having much to see or do has been pretty hard on me. Fortunately Sioux Falls isn't that far away.

I will say, I have five CFB teams within an hour's radius, and a handful more just outside of that - so the fall can be kinda fun running around on the weekends.

I just read an interesting stat - but one source mentions that 84 public or private-non-profit schools and/or campuses have closed or merged since March of 2020.

Kinda wonder how many roster spots have been lost in the last five years due to closures, not to mention cuts with schools that are still open.

Absolutely this. I went to a Wichita State vs Newman University exhibition game several years ago and up until the last couple of minutes of the game Newman was in that fight. Led the game multiple times and had their best player who was running circles around WSU not fouled out late I am pretty sure they would have won. Newman was NAIA at the time. On the football side of things it's a lot tougher to compete with the D1 schools. Even mid level FCS just have that much more money and talented depth that most D2 schools simply can't handle. BUT I will always stand by the Any Given Sunday concept. All it takes is a couple of big breaks and a bad game for the D1 school and suddenly a D2 team can win. There is no reason why a Grand Valley or Pitt, or Ferris couldn't hold their own against even a mid tier-FBS school given they catch some breaks in the game. Be it key player injuries, turnovers, or just poor play from being overlooked. It happens at all levels of the game.

football has to be the hardest sport to do this in given that the bigger team should be able to just win at the line and grind down a low risk game.

that being said GVSU has some elite teams in other sports that compete with d1. Our WBB team has given Ohio state some close games the last two years, and our men’s swim team has a literal Olympian, as does our track and field team.

Years ago I came back from Easter vacation and my students asked me about the student who had jumped to their death off of Blakeslee Stadium. I hadn't heard a word about it- it didn't seem to make the weekend news. Never did hear a reason. When I was a senior in college I was doing a physical fitness test for a PE class on a Friday- came back to Gage to shower and found out some young female student had jumped out of a window- 11th or 12th floor- and landed in the snow. Someone coming to work at the student clinic on the east side of A tower found her lying there. Some bad breakup with the boyfriend was the cause.

Ouch. Pretty sad. Apparently something similar happened last year at Ohio Stadium - a woman leapt from the top and passed during commencement. Sad thing is, her daughter was graduating.

Yeah, they didn't release any details. Just the fact thry found someone. I doubt we'll get much more.

At SJSU where I went to college there's a certain parking garage where several students have jumped off of over the years. It's been around for a long time so these suicides aren't happening every year, but it's weird that one parking garage out of four is where all the suicides have taken place. They are all the same height and they all look the same. Of course some students and nearby residents (the campus is located in downtown San Jose) say it's haunted. I don't know about that, but I do know it's very strange. Makes me think of the Winchester Mystery House which is also in San Jose.

Heartbreak can be very painful, especially for the young.

My first year away at college (sophomore, I attended a local community college as a freshman), my first ever roommate was a senior whose best friend and former roommate had accidentally drunkenly fallen to his death in that same building while living on campus taking summer classes a few months earlier.
