Gallaudet has been my favorite D3 program for a long time and I think this is a good move. I was happy when they joined the ODAC but they got killed last season. They had success in their previous conference (ECFC) before it went under and I hope they do well as an Indie. They stream all their home games for free on YouTube, that's how I get my D3 fix. Go Bison!

      • NCAA to add four new championships

        Flag Football becomes Emerging Sport

Acrobatics & Tumbling and Stunt will compete as National Collegiate Division sports with the first national championship to be held in Spring 2027. Acrobatics & Tumbling has 48 teams, 28 in D2 and 11 in D1. Stunt has 54 teams, 30 in D2 and 7 in D1. Despite D2 being so close to having its own championship, don't expect to see a D2 championship any time soon.

D2 will begin a Bowling championship in Spring 2028. This might spark growth among D2 schools since we won't be competing with D1 schools for championships. McKendree did win 2 championships.

D3 will begin a Women's Wrestling championship in Spring 2028. I expected D3 to do this as soon as the sport was added to championship status by the NCAA. D3 has 67 teams and it makes sense to separate from scholarship offering divisions. There are enough teams for a D2 championship but there are only 6 D1 teams.

Flag Football is added to the Women's Emerging Sport program effective immediately. There are currently 40 schools with a team so the sport's tenure as emerging status should be very brief. D2 has 14 teams with a new team announced earlier this week.

Acrobatics & Tumbling, Stunt, and Wrestling all spent 5 years or less as a Women's Emerging Sport program. I believe it's time for Equestrian and Rugby to be removed from the program as both are not near the amount needed to become NCAA championship sports and have shown very little growth. Rugby was named as an emerging sport nearly 25 years ago while Equestrian has been in the program for nearly 30 years and was almost dropped 10 years ago.

Triathlon is the other emerging sport. It was added in 2014 and although it is past the 10-year mark the sport continues to show growth. There are now enough teams for the sport to seek championship status within the National Collegiate Division and should do so soon.

          • I'm curious what the 19 D3 bowling schools will do.

I never liked playing flag football as a kid because there's no tackling, so I doubt I'll watch it in the college ranks. But I'm all for participation in sports, so more power to 'em. Snag that flag.

              • In the same vein as Mount Olive canceling their field hockey season, it appears that Georgian Court won't have a softball season this spring. They were one of the top teams in the East from 2019 through 2023.

Do they not have the numbers or not have the money?

I have no clue. There hasn't been any sort of announcement, just the fact that the other CACC teams don't have them on their schedules.

                      • College football doesn't have a revenue problem, they have a spending problem.

Nothing is ever enough. A few years ago there was an article about Rutgers football spending a half a million on Doordash. It was pretty outlandish!

Rutgers DoorDash orders for football came to $450K over 14 months

                              • I copied those from another site- I assume that they are accurate. I hate that Wisconsin doesn't have baseball since 1991. The state of Iowa only has one D1 baseball team- Drake, UNI and Iowa State don't have it. Surprised that more southern schools don't have baseball- or softball. Vandy and USC say that they don't have room on campus. Wondering if anyone else will start either sport- or drop it.
