Seems to me the NDSU / SDSU are situating themselves in new markets to bolster NDSU's move to the Mountain West...maybe SDSU isn't far behind?

Some SDSU fans told me some reasons, including the possibility of hosting the conference tournament instead of always having it in Tulsa. I think that SDSU is seeing how the Bison move works out. Meanwhile I see a place like Campbell lose their men's basketball coach because of lack of money going to the program. And Akron has to make huge cuts when they are already below what most of the MAC pays for.

Grand Valley will join the GLVC for men's wrestling in 2026. Big day for wrestling moves, I guess.

Mercyhurst is dropping hockey.

Surely a result of the DI move - axing your most visible team is certainly a strategy. Finances must be so bad that they couldn't move it to the NE-10.

Now there's a conference that really should have changed their name. The two leftover schools that no Power conference wanted (Oregon State and Washington State) won't let go of the past. LOL I doubt the other schools that joined them care about the name, they joined for the extra money they'll make.

I don't know about SDSU's grand scheme in all sports - but FBS is definitely a priority, even if they aren't super vocal about it. Not sure when, but I think it's almost a guarantee at this point.

I do too. I care far more about hockey than basketball, so it's sad when a hockey team with a couple decades of history is sacrificed for mid-major basketball that nobody pays attention too.

Just hope the players and coaching staff find new homes and don't have to give it up entirely.

Agreed. The greed that has taken over college football and men's basketball has no end. Other sports are going to be sacrificed so the haves have even more, and that will disenfranchise 1,000 of students athletes who played sports in college for the opportunity to earn a college degreed free or at a discounted price due to an athletic scholarship. It is ruining the entire college sports model right before our eyes.

The Name is the Brand and the Brand is the money....they won't change it, because the name still means something to most people, just not the ones that are aware of the situation

I thought that this was an interesting map. The writer shows, in his opinion, states where hockey is the #3 college sport after football and basketball in red, and where baseball is the #3 sport in green. Seems somewhat accurate- not so sure about South Dakota. Argue away.

Yea. Not exactly. A better way to word this would be states were hockey is more important than baseball, because the #3 sport in some of these states is neither. Nebraska for instance would be vball. Iowa would be either wrestling or women's bball. Ohio and Pennsylvania I would say wrestling is #3.

If people care little about Mid-Major Basketball they care even less about College Hockey.

Tell that to someone in New England... College hockey (specifically, Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern; not to mention the "state" schools like UMass-Amherst, UMass-Lowell, UNH, Maine, etc.) are more impactful to sports fans in New England than BC football or basketball.

In New England, particularly northern New England, hockey is probably the #1 college sport.

In Vermont, the only college football is at the D3 level (Vermont doesn't sponsor FCS football; UVM's big sport, then is hockey, unless the men's hoops team makes an occasional appearance in March Madness).
In New Hampshire, college hockey's standing really depends on how UNH football does.
In Maine, college hockey is king since I can't recall the last time UMaine was even remotely relevant in football or basketball.

As a geography buff and a UA Anchorage Seawolves hockey fan I love the map. Thanks for sharing laker.
