I always wondered why this hadn't happened before. They seemed like a bit of an outlier in the Peach Belt, both institutionally and geographically.

Not sports related, but Memphis Theological Seminary established in 1852 (Cumberland Presbyterian denomination) is closing in July of this year. :(

Even the California public school system is in trouble. UCLA athletics operate at a significant budget deficit and that is the flagship university of the whole system.

But yes, more privates are headed for the exit. Only a matter of time (and lack of money).

It doesn't help that the Northeast is beyond saturated. I'm honestly surprised more aren't closing. I get it's a very dense population, but given all the current conditions - it's about to get a whole lot worse.

It is affecting public schools out that direction too - like Vermont State, just in different ways.

Yep. Ohio is another state with a crapload of D3 schools. Way too many. But many have pretty large endowments too. Obviously, Ohio State is the richest school in Ohio, but 3 of the top 5 in the state are all small D3 schools (however well known): Case Western Reserve, Dennison, and Oberlin. Crazy to think these three schools each sit on over a billion dollars.

Private schools going broke and shutting down is not a new thing. It's been happening since there have been private schools. Many nearly went under like Lafayette College.

Cal Berkeley is the flagship of the UC system, not UCLA. UCLA started out as a SoCal branch of San Jose State (Cal State system where I went to school) and later became a UC, five decades after Cal Berkeley did.
