Illinois State University just announced it is eliminating its Men's Tennis program.

Not just them. Arkansas and Saint Louis are also cutting tennis. Now tennis doesn't cost that much as a sport, but they lose money on it nevertheless. Got to keep finding ways to cut to boost football and men's basketball. Sad.

Just saw this on Twitter- the schools that have dropped tennis in the last 45 days. Remember, some of these are men's programs, not the women's.

We dropped tennis in 2023 - I just found out about it a couple weeks ago. You'd think that would be a relatively cheap sport to run.

Perhaps operational costs are cheap relative to other sports. But there's probably no revenue to be had and funding the program probably requires most if not all of it to come from the school's budget.

It's just speculation at this point, but my college football junkie friend Terry who went to James Madison University in Virginia and is an avid Dukes athletics booster tells me that JMU has plans to become a full member of the American Conference (no date yet). He's was right about them joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2022, so I won't be surprised if he's right about this one. JMU is already an affiliate member of the American Conference in Women's Swimming & Diving and Lacrosse.

These posts about dropping college tennis made me think of my ol' JUCO (Palomar College in San Diego County, California) and their tennis programs. Well they dropped both Men's and Women's tennis after the 2021 season. I didn't even know that until I checked a few minutes ago. I obviously don't follow college tennis and that's why I'm five years late. Belated Rest In Peace to Palomar Comets tennis.

Maybe this pushes Wichita State to move back to the Missouri Valley. Being in the American hasn't exactly worked for their basketball programs.

It's just more filler games with the way transfers and NIL are concentrating the talent to the most powerful teams. Stability at the lower levels is gone unless things really change.

Moving from the Sun Belt to the American seems like a downgrade to me.

In SMSU's case it wasn't very well publicized - if it was publicized at all. Makes me wonder why we'd drop a program in the middle of a major enrollment campaign.

I suppose it could be logistics, finding a usable indoor tennis space in bad weather could be a hassle - or it's just good old regular budgets.

Very true point.

Looks like the sport itself might not be too expensive to run - but the travel cost has to be enormous, if not the largest in the entire athletic department.

JMU is the bellwether. If they stick in the SBC for the long haul, I believe eventually the SBC will surpass the AAC. If they jump to the AAC, I don't think that happens.
