And D2 schools try to maintain as many sports as possible to boost enrollment numbers. That's a lot of athletes. I would suspect close to one hundred between all four teams.

Close to one hundred seems like a reach. That would be an average of 25 athletes per team, and tennis is typically nowhere near that.

You’re not joking, that’s a ~100% inflation lol. A look at the current rosters for each team shows a total of 53 student-athletes, with men’s swimming the largest at 18, followed by women’s swimming at 16, men’s tennis at 12, and women’s tennis at 7. I’m also guessing that PR for cutting these programs may not be as bad as for others given the heavy foreign makeup of some of the teams.

          5/18 men’s swimmers
          4/16 women’s swimmers
          12/12(!) men’s tennis players
          4/7 women’s tennis players.

It’s much harder to play the “they’re taking opportunities away from our kids” card over cutting tennis when 3/4 of the program isn’t from the US, let alone Alabama.

          • Depends on the school for swimming. The University of Findlay (who has a good swimming team) combined with tennis approaches 80 athletes between the 4 teams.

I believe you quoted a post about University of Montevallo, not Findlay.

Note that the number also dropped from “close to one hundred” to “approaches 80.” Next post will be about a third school and the number will be down to 60.

Remember in 2016 when the WSU President discussed bringing football back, he even had a helmet made up for the press conference. Too bad it never happened.

I remember that terrible plane crash. Unlike Marshall, the football program never game back from that.

Both of my parents were from West Virginia and I definitely remember the Marshall crash. I was only ten years old but I remember my Mom was crying even though she went to WVU, the arch rival of Marshall at the time. They've quit playing each other in football (the Mountaineers are 12-0 against the Thundering Herd), but they still compete in Olympic sports. But I didn't even know about the Wichita State plane crash until they brought the topic of bringing football back a decade ago when that helmet was introduced. Both of those tragedies occured in 1970, about six weeks apart.

                        • Yep, I believe most people know the history of that (especially after the movie, 'We are Marshall' came out).
                          A real tragedy for sure.

Kind of shocking with the amount of building going on at WSU.

                            • I would think that if they went back to the Missouri Valley and played FCS, Wichita State could put together a competitive program pretty quickly. No FCS schools to compete with in Kansas or Oklahoma for talent, so as long as they could out-recruit the MIAA they would be in a pretty good position.

Window to do that seems to be closing with the stadium renovations.
