I don't know about their other sports, but I do know that NIU is really bad at men's basketball. They finished with 6 wins last year (only 3 of which were against other D1 opponents) and a KenPom rating of 343 out of 364, even lower than Mercyhurst. Maybe taking a step down is what they need to start being a little more competitive again.Originally posted by Bballfan View Post
I get that. But leaving the MAC for the Horizon League in other sports I think was a step down. While the Horizon League isn't one of the D1 bottom feeder conferences, it is a step below the MAC. But it is all about football. The tail wags the dog.

They just added four teams to put more Power conference teams in. And all of those teams should have been the #15 & #16 seeds playing on Tuesday or Wednesday- what they did made absolutely no sense. But it is the NCAA...........Originally posted by crixus View Post
That's good, I wish they would have stayed at 64 teams.

Unless something has changed in the last couple years, the MAC rules required that any schools competing in men's / women's basketball also offered football within the MAC. When NIU left the MAC for football, they no longer met the MAC's membership guidelines for continuing to be a member of the conference.Originally posted by Bballfan View Post

The MAC allows affiliate membership, for all sports, including football, but to be a full member you have to have football and men's basketball within the conference.
Thankfully NIU leaving the conference won't impact men's track and field, as NIU was not one of the 5 schools (out of 12 members) that offered the sport.

Remember, the power conference teams are the ones whose fans will generally travel and spend the money. They also generally have much larger fan bases who will spend money related to the event.Originally posted by laker View Post

Then you have Saint Joseph PA. They qualified for the NCAA tournament as one of the 68 teams. Then the school proceeded to drop from D1 to D3.
Just shows there are some really crappy D1 conferences who you wonder if they deserve a bid in the first place.

St Francis…and I would agree with you about the NEC. D1 conference in name only, even though they’ll always have that 16 over 1 upset.Originally posted by Bballfan View PostThen you have Saint Joseph PA. Just saw this on Twitter. Poster didn't have a source. People are guessing West Florida and Lincoln Memorial. I thought that there was going to be a moratorium on move ups to D1?
"Three schools have sent in their letter of intent to move to the D1 level. a school in the Gulf South Conference, Nova southeastern, and a school in the South Atlantic Conference"

Maybe a few, but not large a large number of them. If they reclassify it will be because the NCAA loses the Power 4 and everyone gets relabeled.Originally posted by psugorilla View PostI still stand by the idea that there's going to be a breaking point with all these schools that have moved up in the last 20 years where we are either going to see a large group of them close or reclassify back to D2 and D3.Mavs > Everyone
