Big recruiting guy. USF cougar fan, as many on the NSIC board now; recruiting is one of my great loves. Im the guy whose watched thousands of hours on hudl. Follow 247 sports heavily, also d2 twitter. My question is with the ever changing aspect of things in d2 recruiting (transfer portal) etc, how are the elite schools attracting star recruits? How are they keeping those that end up being stars? Do we have organizations in place at schools like Harding, GVSU, Ferris, West Georgia, NWMSU that are helping with NIL deals? Whats the interworking of D2 football in the 2020s?

As far as I know, NIL/collectives play very little to no role in HS recruiting. Even the schools that do have NIL/collectives are using it selectively. NIL at the D2 level is mostly used for roster retention, giving upperclassmen and/or 2-deep guys a little bit extra on top of their scholarships to try and fight the “allure” of transferring for a full ride at D1. Another piece of it is that D1 schools are recruiting way less HS kids so most of the Ferris/GV type schools are not facing as much competition from D1 schools and more just competing against a few other elite D2s, thus NIL for HS recruiting is not much a factor. Now in D3/D2 to D2 transfer recruiting NIL can definitely be a factor, but most places your still just talking a few thousand at the max, compared to 10-50k at G5 and 100k+ at P5.
