Strength of the offense should be the OL. Coaches seem to think that RB Quincy Wimbish will be a top performer. QB Phillips is a dual threat that can produce with his arm as well as his feet but that comes at a price...that being injury. QB2 Eric Taylor will probably see some serious playing time. The WR group is experienced but none have truely performed at a high level so there is plenty of room to improve. HB Durbin is a top tier performer and will be a key outlet for Phillips. To succeed, WLU's OL needs to open holes consistently for Wimbish AND protect Phillips to prevent him from getting happy feet and bolting out of the pocket. Durbin needs to have a big year receiving and at least one (probably 2) of the WR's need to break from the pack and become more than just adequate.

Strength of the Defense is clearly the defensive backfield. Three graduate students, a Senior and a Junior here bode well for this year. Ojo and Deri are the stars of an experienced and highly productive unit. The DL grouping is also experienced and solid. The LB group is young but have the potential to be solid if unspectacular. The top tier experience and depth of the defense make it the unit that WLU is going to have to lean on if they want to succeed this year. Given the question marks on offense, the defense is going to have to be great and not JUST good.

Players to watch this coming year:

RB Wimbish - For WLU to go, he has to go. He has produced big in HS and JUCO so he is capable.
DL Cody Rein - Rein pas been playing with a bad hip for the last serveral years and was still an All-MEC select. Offseason surgery has made him pain free for the first time and he apparently is playing at a level he has never played at before.

Break-out players to keep an eye on:

WR Anthony Smoot - FAST! According to Coach Hills, halfway through the first special team practice Coach W told him "We have to figure out a way to get the ball in his hands." As they say, can't teach speed...question is can he catch!!
LB Craig McRae - Late transfer from New Mexico Highlands will limit his early playing time, but the former true Freshman starter at NMH should be able to work his way into the starting lineup pretty quickly.
QB Erik Taylor - Coach W has spoken highly of him. Given Phillips willingness to run (and get injured), Taylor is one play away from being QB1.

OL is young but experienced. Ely and Williams have starting experience from last year while Pedrozo and Garner have starting experience at their respective JUCO's.

Don't know what it is, but WLU just is never ready for the first game of the season...but to be honest, they aren't ready for many after that either! 0-0 at the end of the 1st. Defensive backfield isn't as good as the coaching staff said they would be...Neither is the offensive line. WLU QB is 1-4 in the first qtr. Only positive is that Wimbush appears to be a pretty good RB.

Philips throws a prayer into tripple coverage on 3 and 18, WLU's Robinson goes up and makes a circus catch for the Topper TD. WLU 7 WU 0 midway through the 2nd.

OK THAT was a good throw and catch. Phillips with the nice 15 yard pass to TE Coles who takes it the rest of the way for an 85 yard TD. WLU 14 WU 0.

First ever score for WU CARDINALS makes it 14-3 WLU.

As typical...too many poorly timed penalties. WU drives down for a FG at the end of the half added by two third down defensive holding calls. 14-3 at the half.

WLU has a lot of work to do this coming week or Thursdays game vs NDC is going to be ugly.

WLU is just so sad. Here's the latest example. Phillips picks up the first down on a nifty 8 yard 3rd down run. BUUUUTTTTT...Illegal motion on WLU. Next play WJU blows up a screne for no gain. The punter then muffs the snap to turn the ball over at the 20. Two plays later WU claims their first lead in program history 17-14.

Seems like every year this team is just never ready to play and constantly shoots themselves in the foot with penalties. This year appears to be more of the same.

My prediction win or lose Coach W will talk about "rivalry game" and about how teams play better as they are as the reason for the loss. Always an excuse.

Uhhh, rivalry game with a first year team ??? Remember, if the Toppers lose this one they may not get a chance to avenge it.

Yea...I know. But our coach always comes up with an excuse for losing. Can't blame this on injuries (that's his favoriate excuse) or breaking in a new QB (his second favorite excuse) sooooo...the only thing he will be able to blame it on is that WLU and WU have a big rivalry. Never his fault or the coaching staff's fault.

I don't know how he continues to even WANT to coach. If a normal person was as bad at their job for as long as he's been bad, they would quit and find another job!!!

WLU should be ashamed to take this W, but I'm guessing the HC will chalk it up to hard work and great coaching !!!

What a sad game by WLU. WLU claims a 33-30 win over WU. Yep...Wheeling University...as in the team playing its FIRST college football game. WLU's "vaunted" experienced DB crew gave up 401 yards to QB Strachan also playing in his first college football game.

A win is a win...But it was just sooooo sad seeing WLU play sooooo very very poorly against a team they should have dominated. I feel a 2 win season coming on.

Probably will. He'll say he is just "so proud of his boys for not giving up." Won't mention at all that this his team was playing against a team playing in their first college game.
