  • Indiana High School - Nickname Debate (Former IUP Mascot)

    https://www.indianagazette.com/news/...665a2ec37.html

Debate recently surfaced regarding the mascot/nickname for the local Indiana Area Senior High School. Similar conversation that occurred when IUP made the switch.

I'm not sure the 'Little Crimson Hawks' has the same ring to it.

I'm actually surprised it has lasted this long in this modern (anal) society.

Hopefully not many schools are still using slurs like Redmen or Savages. In this case they could at least use imagery and logos that reflect Native Americans from the immediate region. That's what is problematic - as stated in the article IHS like most others rely on antiquated stereotypes of one particular culture foreign to the local area.

In all honesty, the Adidas deal is worth it for a cash-strapped district. Change the name, get the new logos and equipment, and tell the complainers to pay for it themselves if they want to keep the old name and logos.

Edinboro was way ahead of this. They were the Red Raiders for decades and often using cartoonish imagery that would cause most of us to blush today. In the mid-50s they switched all imagery over to their Scottish heritage and became the Highlanders not long after switching to Fighting Scots.

Interestingly, my wife's high school decades ago swung conservative and they changed their name TO Native American imagery (Red Devils to Red Raiders). There was a movement that Red Devils would move kids out of Christian churches and toward devil worship. Really.

This has been on again off again for at least 10 years, and the imagery used has been cleaned up several times. There are alot of people in town that really don't want it to change - there are dueling petitions with keep the name winning 3 to one right now. The funny thing is, in the end it really doesn't matter so much what a HS sports teams nickname is but people will fight in the nastiest ways over it. http://wdadradio.com/duelling-petiti...ihs-team-name/ -- of course with the washington Redskins keeping their name, people wonder why only rich guys get to use that nickname.

Miami University in Ohio was the Redskins until 1997. There is an even more fractured fan base - and that school's average student is a yuppie upper middle class white kid. The university did itself a disservice by allowing the logo to be used after it was abandoned. Hell, they allowed hockey and football game crowds to perform the "Miami Scalp Song" with mouth whooping through 2010. You get five miles from that campus and you'll see as many Confederate flags as a Skynyrd concert.

Sooooo...The imagery, both physical and psychological, of a brutish, semi-clothed Scottish barbarian more inclined to settle matters with a sword than his intellect is somehow NOT insulting to Americans with Scottish ancestry?? Same question of the "Fighting Irish" mascot of Notre Dame who feeds into the negative stereotype of the drunken Irishman who's only redeeming social value was their willingness to beat the crap out of each other?? Why are those and others like them not a slur??

                1. Edinboro (town and university) were founded by Scots.

                2. All depictions are historically accurate and tasteful albeit inconsistent by era.

                3. Edinboro honors that Scottish heritage by sponsoring a bagpipe band, annual Highland Games, a minor in bagpipes, trips to Scotland, and the fight song being the unofficial national anthem.

If you ask a Scot they'll object to the improper pronunciation of Edinboro.

Maybe Fighting Natives. Or a new one instead of Blue Devils....Some school can use White Devils.

Re: Indiana High School - Nickname Debate (Former IUP Mascot)

Let us not forget the IUP student body voted to adapt the nickname of "Fighting Squirrels" not all that long ago. True story. I had a vote.

Luckily, it was ultimately rejected. Who were we to cast squirrels as fighters? Very cruel toward their breed.

How about the Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins, Florida State Seminoles, San Diego State Azteks, Kansas City Chiefs, etc.

What about the Ole Miss Rebels? Tell me that doesn't have some undertones.

This is all starting to remind me of the movie PCU. Personally, I see the names as a way of honoring and remembering the Indian cultures. I think the 'white man' at least owes them that much.

Change the IHS nickname to Little Crimson Hawks. Get rid of their version of Cherokee. Fifth Street Stadium can rock out to Ghostbusters, too.

FSU has a longstanding relationship with the Seminole tribe, so I think that one is safe.

Illini is a funny one. I can see the "Fighting" part being dropped, but Illini and Illinois are both derivatives of the same word. Its kind of like Philadelphia Phillies. So unless you are going to rename the whole state, it seems pointless to change that one.
