  • Shepherd vs. Ohio Dominican game one

After studying both teams here, I see two areas for both teams that will play a huge role in deciding this game. First on the Shepherd side, is the play of the defensive line. I've stressed this in previous threads, but without Adam McLean in there yet, the defensive line is a little undersized. Both Ricky Robinson and Scott Dixon bring plenty of game experience and both are motors in the middle. Today OD brings a huge offensive line and a solid running game. The offense is a balanced attack and put up over 41 points a game last year. That defensive line will need to hold their running game in check and force them to throw. Shepherd has an experienced secondary who can create turnovers.
On the OD side of the ball, their secondary will need to step up. It is true Shepherd has some new receivers in the mix, but their new receivers are lightning in a bottle. As a whole, this is the fastest corp we have seen. A good many are game experienced transfers who understand how to get open. I would also argue that Shepherd's type of offense eliminates some of the timing issues because the plays are quick hitters. Usually the long seam plays are the two TE's exploiting that area. OD's secondary will need to make the initial tackles or it could be off to the races.

That's called PSAC officiating. I was at the game today and thought Shepherd played well until the two bad turn overs in the 4th qtr. The lost fumble in the ODU endzone and ODU taking it down the field for TD on the ensuing drive wasn't good, but Shepherd responded and put up 7 right away to answer ODU. The muffed punt and the late fumble were the daggers, especially the late fumble when Shepherd could have sealed the game with a score or run out the clock with a couple first downs. The Shepherd D made some good stands to get the ball back, only to have to go right back in the field because of those two errors. If they can clean up the errors, the can make a run at the East.

Well, needless to say, Shepherd has nobody to blame for this loss other then themselves. Three fumbles by Shepherd was the difference. The punt return attempt should have never happened and a rough game by our runningback although the one fumble was very questionable. They say the biggest improvements happen between game one and two. If they figure out ball security, they'll be fine.

Big props to Adam McLean who despite not playing was out mentoring other defensive linemen throughout the game. The defensive line did a good job holding down OD's run game.
