  • OT: Slippery Rock Bringing Back Wrestling?

According to wrestling writer Jason Bryant:

Slippery Rock has committed to restarting its men's wrestling team & adding a women's wrestling team contingent upon raising $5M by June 2021. The alumni group leading this charge will have more info publicly available in the next week or two. SRU dropped wrestling in '06.

BUT...I have to think long term this hurts Rock football. I have nothing against wrestling but its very clear that Edinboro's bump to D1 wrestling coincides with the start of Edinboro's drop on the football side. Just doesn't work well with Title IX.

I think they would go D2 but you never know. They could be the 16th team in the MAC. I don't even know whether they would qualify for D1 as the clause is currently written; however, if they wanted to go D1 I'm sure it could be worked out. The concept is that women's wrestling will eventually offset in terms of Title IX, provided they can get the numbers in the women's program. SRU should never have dropped wrestling in the first place (IMHO).

Seems like there are some contingencies, namely $5M.

That's not exactly chump change -- and in a short time period.

Who knows. Perhaps they have a legit whale lined up.

Anything to weaken their foosball program...

Incidentally, in 2006 when they dropped wrestling they dropped 7 other sports at the same time.

How many D1 wrestling programs are there in the conference?

Rock had previously been grandfathered into D1 wrestling. I doubt they get it a second time.

Who knows? It's a special situation. If they have the resources and want to be D1 the entire wrestling community would be on their side. There have been too many D1 programs lost over the years.

Is it accurate to say that D2 Pitt-Johnstown may beat all four of our D1 programs in wrestling this year?

Speaking of restarting programs, Shepherd is going to add men's and women's cross country teams this fall. They had dropped the sport in 2003.

No. They wouldn't beat LHU. In an injury-riddled season LH finished 5th out of 15 teams at last weekend's MAC championships.

UPJ is ranked 3rd in D2. I am pretty sure they'd beat Bloom who is one executive decision away from D2.

Against Clarion and 'Boro it would be competitive and probably come down to individual matchups. I'd bet on Clarion to prevail over UPJ and UPJ over Edinboro (although Edinboro is coming back strong after the Baumgartner saga and will be a top 30 D1 program in the next couple years.).

Against strong D1 teams UPJ gets wiped out. It's like asking if SRU could beat Pitt in football in 2019.

This was the first season the D1 programs did not compete in the PSAC tournament since the D2's banded together and ousted the D1's due to the competitive imbalance.

Edit: I just took a quick look at Edinboro's results from 2019-20 and I'm pretty sure the Scots would beat UPJ head-to-head.

Wrestling was a big time sport in my high school. What kind of attendance to they get? Prior to Covid-19 of course....

And yes, Shepherd has added that exciting sport of X-Country. I'm ok with that rather than having track lanes around Ram Stadium..
