I hear your arguments but you have to remember the most important factor in all of this ... $$$

That's where it all starts and all ends.
I’m not stupid, I know where all this starts and ends. I don’t care what the networks want. I don’t care what the conference commissioners want. I don’t care what fans of the SEC or B1G want. All I’m doing is talking college football and the farce of a playoff that exists.

I’m asking you (with zero other influencing factors)… Do you want television theatre, or a national championship process? One or the other.

Because here’s the deal. Let’s say Georgia beats Texas on Saturday. Why on Earth should the Longhorns get a 3rd shot to beat Georgia to win a national championship?

If that’s anybody wants, that is not a national championship playoff tournament. That is an invitational style tournament built for television theater. If that’s what it is, fine. But don’t pretend it’s something it’s not.

    • Why are they staging these other useless bowls?

Nobody cares watching mediocre teams play meaningless games in half empty stadiums.

I want theater. I could give two sh!ts who wins. I'm a casual D1 viewer. No allegiance to any team.

That said, I wouldn't even turn on Georgia vs Tulane as background television. That's the problem. Many feel that way.

My opinion, of course, is meaningless. Your beef is with the machine. I understand.

I do think it's hilarious Alabama may backdoor its way in. I'd love to see them get hot and wreck havoc. Now THAT woud be great theater. America would love that underdog story. In March that would be called a Cinderella Story ... the low seed who snuck in and created chaos.

Portal departures and opt-outs will make bad games even worse.

You’re in favor of an invitational tournament then, not a national championship. I at least appreciate you admitting that.

I’ve long stated that we once rooted for Cinderella. We no longer do. The college football invitational tournament allows for “more teams to have a chance,” but it only offers 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chances to more of the same teams from the Power 2. It doesn’t actually afford an opportunity to those who actually earned their seat at the table.

UCF was 12-0 in 2017 and was laughed at for even wanting consideration for the playoff. They would have made the playoff under this format, but the point stands.

The networks and their talking heads have pushed the narrative so hard that nobody can crash the party anymore. We have been conditioned to “want theater” and assume everyone not from 2 conferences deserves no shot.

ESPN owns and/or produces most of the bowls.

Alabama as an "underdog story"? Seriously? Three-loss Alabama being ranked where they are is a joke.

                  Sarcasm on that front.

But, the unwanted guest angle ... I would find that entertaining.

                  • I think they’re getting what they want, and that is a lot of people talking about it. I sat there and watched an hour-long special on ESPN where they announced the “projected” rankings. It wasn’t even the final field and I’m sitting there watching them talk about it, LOL.

From a pure entertainment perspective, I like the 12 teams and hearing the various arguments. It’s like the NCAA basketball tournament where people argue over the last four out and in a bracket of nearly 70 teams. If there were 100 teams, there would be discussion and arguments. I do think teams that aren’t in the BIG or SEC start the season swimming against the current, and that’s unfortunate. It might take SMU winning the whole thing to change some perspectives or we’ll be here again next year.

How is any money being made on them? Nobody cares about them. Once this expanded playoff takes root the bowl system is going to wither away.

I think 12 teams is sufficient. Right now Boise State gets a bye if they win this week so it’s not like lesser conferences aren’t getting a seat. D1 is seeing that you might need to play better teams OOC to get better SOS instead of playing multiple cupcakes looking for a payday. If I was PennState I’d be oooking to play at least one ACC and one See Everyone Cheat team OOC very year instead of a few MAC cupcakes. There needs to be more interest conference play to determine conference strength each year.

There truly need to either three D1 levels or they exclude foosball from the rule you have to be D1 in all sports do some FCS schools can drop back to D2 and then push the MAC and other low level FBS conferences to FCS. They should be able to compete. I mean North Dakota State and a MAC school are pretty much the same thing in my opinion.

For the SEC and B1G I think this season proves the exact opposite. Indiana beat no one, got handled by the one good team they faced, didn’t make the conference title game and is safely in the playoff. Penn State essentially did the same, but the tiebreakers put them in the B1G title game, which honestly might not be the best thing for them. There’s zero incentive for the SEC teams to challenge themselves in the non conference when 10-2 guarantees a playoff spot and 9-3 has you right in the hunt.

Penn State should have beaten The Overrated State University...that was a coaching choke job right there.

With payrolls now...there will be no Super Teams anymore...it;s why Saban got out...he lost his one big advantage he had over everyone...the big secret payroll.

Now everyone can pay...and he talent is going to spread out.

Indiana crushed a lot of teams on their schedule, they didn't make their conference schedule. Curt may start scheduling harder OOC games to bulk the resume.

They played three cupcakes OOC. That is why they will be at the bottom of the playoff rankings and going on the road for the first round.

They did play the two teams in the National Title Game last year...how is it their fault both teams dropped far this year?

This whole "they had an easy schedule" argument in college and pro foosball is just an excuse for fans of teams on the bubble who didn't do what they should have....

Well, there is another thing about Indiana. They were able to beat Michigan, and Ohio State was not. While winning the big games gets headlines, you also have to beat the teams your talent level dictates you should beat. That's why I don't think Alabama should be in the playoff. They lost to two 6-6 teams. A program with their talent level shouldn't have lost either of those games, let alone two of them. It's the equivalent of PSU losing both the USC and Minnesota games this season, and I'd put USC up against either Vanderbilt or Mizzou this year.
