  • SMU made it.

    • So Alabamastan got sent packing. Thank Goodness.

SMU heads to Happy Valley for the Sanction Survivors Bowl. I wonder if Craig James and the 42 year old chip on his shoulder will attend. Winner faces Boise State.

Cignetti Mafia at Real Notre Dame…that will have a great crowd.

Conference Title games matter. As they should.

      • I’d guess the first tweek to the format will be not reserving the first round byes only for conference champions and giving them to the top 4 teams. I couldn’t hear all the talk because my kids were going nuts but I thought I heard Rece Davis call for it.

I think Conference Champions getting a bye is fine. Boo hoo hoo runner ups…win your games.

I mean it’s all neutral field after round 1 so there is no home field advantages going forward.

I'm hoping for a Penn State - Indiana semifinal matchup. I think Penn State sits in a favorable position in this field.

I don’t have an issue with it but it feels like Boise and Arizona State getting them isn’t going to sit well.

for all the hand wringing leading up to the reveal, it’s a good field and should be fun to watch. There’s always going to be controversy/debate about the last spot.

I dunno, from what I saw of the ACC I think Boise and ASU have as much a claim to those spots as they do. Win your playoff games, and you'll probably get more respect in the future. At least all the top leagues have a representative, and they'll decide it on the field. It's a big improvement from the four-team drama, and we won't be seeing the same half-dozen teams in the playoff every year.

They drew a favorable bracket as long as their coach doesn’t blow it.

This. The BIG and SEC got 7 of the slots..that is sufficient.

                    • What an intriguing bracket. I’m not sure they did Oregon any favors having to play the winner of Tennessee and Ohio State. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Volunteers win in that spot, but if they don’t, they’re setting up a potential Ohio State rematch. They really punished the Buckeyes for that awful loss to Michigan. Plus you have Texas in that half of the bracket and when they’re not playing Georgia, they look really good.

The lower half of the bracket seems really up for grabs. I’m kind of thinking Notre Dame is the favorite. Once they inexplicably lost to Northern Illinois, people quit paying attention but they’ve won 10 in a row since and many of those were blowouts. I know they gave Georgia the #2 overall seed but I’ve seen them play several times and they’re far from the team they were 2-3 years ago. Penn State has too much history of coming close in big games but not coming out on top to get serious consideration in my opinion. Their placekicking game is also too inconsistent and that’s killer in a win or go home scenario.

                      • Herby's kid commits to ... Michigan.

                        Didn't see that twist coming.

I’m not sure the Herbstreit family has any a significant amount of affinity for Ohio State as a whole at this point. He moved his family out of Ohio a few years back and went to Nashville because they were getting threats due to him not always wearing Scarlet and Gray glasses when doing his job.

I remember seeing some quotes and seeing an article about it. He wanted away from the Ohio State lunacy.

I wouldn’t say he pushed his kid towards Michigan, but I don’t think he was begging him to go to OSU either. His other two sons played for Clemson as walk ons. Seems like Chase is a 3-star QB recruit.

Getting old. I remember his kids on Gameday when they must have been 5 or 6.

Vols have a good defense, and Ohio State has had trouble running against strong defenses since they lost 2-3 key guys on their o-line. I think they had a guard playing left tackle against Michigan.

Which makes it even more baffling that they tried to run the ball so much against Michigan. Ego is something coaches are prone to suffering with and there seems to be reluctance at all levels to just go with what’s working instead of trying to prove a point. Saying all that, I have to believe the two weeks off will really help Ohio State.
