I'll actually be surprised if either coaches this weekend.

It’s going to be a decent year (at least numerically) for guys looking to make the jump from coordinator or G5 head coach to P5 head coach or those looking to get back into the HC gig (ala Big Game James). Florida, Oklahoma State, UCLA, PSU, Virginia Tech, and Arkansas are already open, barring the choice of making their interim coaches permanent. FSU & Wisconsin are at least thinking about separating. Add in that Stoops the younger may be on the hot seat at Kentucky, Bill O’Brien is stinking up the joint at BC, UNC is in a TMZ marriage that I have to imagine they’d love to find a way out of, and there are going to be openings.

I think Norvell survives. They currently sit at 3-4, with how heavy that buyout is (54 million for him, and 18 mill for the assistants) if they can get to 6-6, I could see him coming back. FSU doesn't have the cash that some of those other blue bloods have.

Stanford is also looking for a permanent head coach; I forgot about them. They’re currently being interim coached by Frank Reich, a career NFL guy who’s 63, so probably not a candidate to stay long-term.

The days of Stanford football glory are probably past. The current D1 climate does not set up well for them, and being shunted into the ACC, which is even more ridiculous geographically than the B1G, is not going to help.

I could see them going either way. Pulling back from FBS but there isn't a conference of strong academic schools on the west coast anymore. Its really stupid that they blew up the Pac 12. But if Stanford loses out on the future of federal research, I can see them going all in on athletics to generate additional revenue. They're an expensive school to run.

My point isn’t that they’re a glamor job but that being a head coach at a P5 school is still a step up compared to being a coordinator or coaching at a G5 or FCS school. They might not attract a name as big as, say, Franklin but there are going to be people who want that job.

Some CBS Sports analyst (Todd Fuhrman - I hadn't ever heard of him either) started the elitist crying a little early this year. He's realizing that some of the beauty brands won't make the dance and teams like Georgia Tech, Vandy, and South Florida are crashing the party.

I'm sorry if you aren't a big enough football fan to want to watch Georgia Tech and South Florida in a College Football Playoff game. If you don't like it, don't watch. It's that simple. It's mind boggling how many people have lost the fundamental understanding of the difference between college football and the NFL. Fans should not care about the tv ratings. You should either choose to watch football or not. I don't care if you don't get to see the helmets or logos you know and recognize in the Playoff. Don't watch if you don't like it.

You still need to play the games to get to the CFP. And I'm sorry... There's not a single person on this message board that can tell me that they'd be more interested in watching a Michigan team that has zero identity square up against a Texas team that can't complete a pass or score points. If you are a COLLEGE FOOTBALL FAN and if you have watched the regular season, Georgia Tech and South Florida is an infinitely better and more interesting matchup to watch.

With you 100%. I stand by my assertion that the silent majority of casual college football fans want Cinderella stories. They just don't want to be told what to think - that's the difference between the years of Boise State, TCU, and BYU knocking on the door and UCF claiming national championships. The solution is that every FBS conference champion gets in. If the MAC gets destroyed every year, they can figure out how to get better or opt out for bowl games nobody wants to watch. The upstart G5 coach might play against the school looking to hire him away - that's great drama. The one time out of five that South Florida or Georgia Tech knocks off Alabama? Great drama. It makes heads explode and respect the game played on the field - not the feelings of supremacy by media idiots or Vegas.

Although I did attend SMU at PSU in the playoffs last year. It was most boring game I've ever seen in person. It was Varsity vs JV in 20 degrees and cost me about $1k.

I’ll tune in no matter who is playing. I’ll probably tune out quickly if the game is not competitive, but college football is just more prone to blowouts whether it’s two SEC powers or Ohio State vs an FBS school. I want the Cinderella to get a shot, I like seeing the less prominent P4 teams rise up.

TCU knocked off Michigan and was in the national championship game. Sure, they got plastered by Georgia the next week. But they were there. They had a shot. Now, TCU has to knock off Michigan. Then they need to beat Alabama. Then they need to beat Notre Dame. And then they need to beat Ohio State. The expansion is about money, sure. But it's also to mostly ensure that everyone who are the casual viewers can feel warm and fuzzy that they will always be able to watch two historical brands in the national championship game.

That's a different conversation altogether, but yeah, I'm with you with your assessment.

Yes! This is about consolidating power and money just like they did with March Madness. The NCAA is deathly afraid of losing the P4. But the great irony is that one of the greatest moments in college sports history is Appalachian State beating Michigan, which now even as a playoff would be unlikely to ever be played again.
