  • The much maligned ACC championship game matchup could have two potential PSU candidates going head to head.

There are some pretty notable voices in college football, namely Joel Klatt and Tim Brando, who aren’t closing the door on Kalen Deboer to Penn State. I can’t imagine it but if Bama gets whooped on Saturday, opening the door for them to miss the 12 team playoff for the second straight year, he might just become available.

... and the Lane Train would be re-routed to Tuscaloosa the following morning.

This isn’t a far-fetched idea. I’ve heard that DeBoer hasn’t exactly enjoyed his stay in Tuscaloosa. Culturally it just hasn’t been a fit as I’ve heard it described. There are two plausible explanations for why Penn State hasn’t hired anyone. 1) They’ve completely botched the search and are getting told no at every turn, or 2) The guy they’re hiring is still coaching a conference championship or playoff team and they don’t want to pull a Kiffin.

Bama HC said today he has no interest in PSU job.

Granted, we all know coaches would never lie.

But, leaving Alabama for Creepy Valley seems like a stretch to me. It's just trading one cult for another.

Reminds me of drinking Kool-Aid in Jonestown to moving to Spahn Ranch with Charlie.

Ohio State OC Brian Hartline is a name that I’ve seen floating around. I think the hot coordinator is probably the way to go at this point, whether it’s Hartline or someone else. Sitting HCs just aren’t into this job other than using it to get a better situation with their current employer.

Or they could hire Brian Daboll. Would that excite anyone?

If they settle on Terry - after National Signing Day has now passed - it will be a tragedy the AD will not survive. At this point, they would be settling.

To me, not naming Terry in the days prior pretty much said he's not the guy. The fancy class they had lined up is long gone.

The PSU boards are at an epic fever.

            • I think Penn State became the much anticipated job ruined by itchy big money boosters with grand delusions. By forcing out Franklin, who was well respected in the profession and clearly did well, they proved nobody will survive there so why bother. They did irreparable damage lol

I wouldn't go that far. They recovered from Jerry.

                This can get fixed (eventually).

                But, what a disaster.

The crazy in Baton Rouge hasn’t stopped them from hiring the next sucker. Thry fired the guy who won them a title with one of the best team ever and lured Brian “1-6 vs IUP” Kelly from Notre Dame and then chucked him after a few years to get Lame Kiffin. How is that job elite? There is nothing prestigious about the Louisiana State University

I wouldn’t be shocked if they hired a guy who’s coaching this weekend. I would be shocked if it’s Deboer. If you have any reason to believe Deboer is a possibility why let the Kalani Sitake story gain the legs it did and make the program look so bad?

It’s hard to say where some of these stories are coming from, but yes, none of it looks good. The more likely possibility of the two I posted above is that this is just being totally botched. It’s hard to fathom a rabbit being pulled out of the hat after all of this.

What’s interesting is the timing of this, just as they’re finishing up renovations on Beaver Stadium and what was supposed to be the crescendo of the program. As loyal as the fanbase has been, it showed how quickly it can find something else to do when the team isn’t good. A buddy of mine was at their last home game and said the place was half empty.

                      • Billy Napier (recently of Florida) is said to be the front-runner for the James Madison job.

Brian Kelly is single and ready to mingle.

                          But he’s 1-6 vs IUP.

                          • According to just about everybody, Iowa State’s Matt Campbell is Penn State’s new target. He’s been mentioned in a lot of coaching searches in the last few years so I’m a bit surprised it took this long for his name to come up. I don’t think his name is quite as hot as it had been, but I think it would a nice job of salvaging this really messy search if they can land him.

I'm a Penn Stater, but I almost want this hire to fall through because of something like some corn farmer driving in a tractor full of cash to keep Campbell, or the Paterno loyalists blocking the signing to force Kraft's hand, or something else more ridiculous.

That being said, if Kraft gets Campbell after all this, then good on him. Kraft should be thanking whoever his boss is that he still has a job after thinking Sitake was ever going to be a good fit for the program.

The tractor better hurry because it sounds like the deal is about done. Given what’s transpired, I don’t think Penn State could’ve done any better. The guy stayed at Iowa State for 10 years despite being brought up in connection with practically every job opening in the last several years. And he signed a top 10 class, so assuming at least some of those guys jump with him the PSU signing day debacle may quickly be forgotten.
