Teams with the financial resources to do so can completely rebuild themselves through the portal. Not all are successful as was mentioned above. Saying that, this is one of the main reasons I don’t care for today’s world of college football. Teams that make major changes should expect to have at least a season or two of struggle due to loss of players alone.

When Bill O’Brien took over after Paterno he went 8-4 and 7-5 respectively. James Franklin was 7-6 and 7-6. They couldn’t reload like Campbell can do now. Although he still has some things to overcome, it wouldn’t shock me at all if Penn State went 10-2 next year. The schedule certainly sets up for it with the toughest game being on the road at Michigan in Week 5.
Yes..Penn State has a relatively easy schedule next year. I agree with you about the portal. Penn State is giving him cash to spend. I heard Big Game James didn’t spend.

    • So BYU is out of playoff contention. The top 8 from last week’s rankings are solidly in. Tulane is in. Either Virginia or James Madison will be in depending on the ACC championship game. Alabama is most likely in. If they do lose to Georgia, I can’t see it being lopsided enough to generate any discussion of bumping them out.

So it’s Notre Dame or Miami for the last spot and it’s a fascinating debate. Miami won head to head but Notre Dame is ranked higher and is playing just about as well as any team in the country.

Joe Tessitore and Jesse Palmer are advocating for Miami on the Big 12 telecast and I agree that head to head has to matter. But I kinda feel like the ACC championship game might impact this decision as well. If Virginia wins and the ACC is represented then I think they’ll put ND in. If Duke wins and the ACC would otherwise be left out, I think the Canes make it.

It will be real hard to keep that ND mega brand home.

I get that. And if my theory has any merit I’m sure the committee is rooting hard for Virginia. To me it’s hard to fathom leaving a P4 conference completely out. And the justification is easy. They played head to head and Miami won..

            I agree.

I love The U (or, the old version).

However, ND is the media darling. Picking over a head to head winner would be crazy.

The obvious answer is just to take them both and tell Tulane “better luck next time.” Or leave them both out and take Utah (also 10-2) and Virginia (ACC champ) instead to avoid solving the “head-to-head” vs. “qualitatively better” debate.

Then maybe they should join a conference.

I won’t feel sorry for them if they get left out. It’s about time their arrogance trips them up.

Come on ... who isn't dying to watch crappy Clemson play PSU?

Why not play a rival game that would actually generate interest.

True enough, but the portal can be hit or miss. High school is just one piece of the puzzle, but with two high school recruits at this point you'd darned well better hit the portal.

Yea, bama shouldn’t make it. Miami should be in with ND.

                            • So many empty seats at the ACC Title game. Embarrassing. It’s not like either school is that far from Charlotte.,

Those tickets could have been free and it would look the same. It's just a terribly unattractive matchup.
