I think I had read that Clemson had 27 opt outs and that number was expected to grow. I don’t know what the final tally was for them, but it was a skeleton crew.

I think the broadcasting crew had a bunch of opt-outs too, the camera work and announcing weren’t exactly top-notch.

Some of these bowls might draw enough TV viewership in world of cable and stream to stick around, but the days of the Podunk Garbage Bowl drawing substantial crowds to a game are probably over. Who wants to pay high ticket prices and travel costs to see two mediocre teams that won't even match their usual level of mediocrity in the bowl because half their team has opted out of the game? Yeah, win one for ol' State U. LOL.

The northern bowls best have a good matchup (with teams that can somewhat draw) to get people to sit out in rough weather. PSU can check that box.

6 are the G6 conference champions. Conference determines how that's decided.

That leaves 10 spots for P4 champions, runners up, independents, and whomever else. Each P4 conference is guaranteed 2 spots for them to determine. This leaves 2 spots also-rans for P4 and Notre Dame.

But outside of being a conference champion, you can't have more than 2 losses and must play 11 FBS opponents. This way a 3 loss SEC team can't take the place of a 1 loss team from another conference. A committee with representatives from each conference determines the seeding similar to MBB. So this year, this is what it would look like:

1. Indiana
2. Ohio State
3. Georgia
4. Ole Miss
5. Texas Tech
6. Miami
7. Brigham Young
8. Notre Dame
9. Duke
10. Texas A-M
11. Oregon
12. James Madison
13. Tulane
14. Boise State
15. Miami OH
16. Kennesaw State

Unless the tournament winner earns a spot in the actual playoff, a G-only tournament is pointless. Otherwise, there's no point to having it and nobody would care about it. It only makes sense once the Power teams finally decide to break off and do their own thing.

That's what I was getting at ... P4 is the big stage and its own level.

G becomes essentially its own thing. Nationally, correct, nobody would care, but the G teams could at least have a chance to win a championship.

Nobody needs or wants to see Ohio State play the MAC champion in Round 1.

Essentially a third of the field being G5s is too much for me. In a 16 team field I’d bump the conference championship qualifiers up to the top 6 ranked champions, guaranteeing the G5 two spots. If a situation like this year’s ACC should arise again, the G5 could snag a third spot.

You make a good point but the fallacy is the "ranking." Paul Finebaum has a vote this year and is a total pawn of the SEC. I shared how ESPN has 2-10 Arkansas ranked ahead of 10-2 Navy.

I think giving every FBS conference at least one spot also fixes the opt out and "week 13 transfer" mess we've got this year. Teams including the MAC champion players need something valuable to play for. Even if there's just one upset a year, that is enough. If the P4 is as great and deep as many believe, they should take the easy first round win, right?

The greatest irony is that many P4 fans are saying the G5 teams are terrible and don't belong, yet the P4 is poaching entire rosters and coaching staffs, so clearly they do belong.

I'm against humans deciding who gets in and who doesn't probably necessary for at large bids. Top 25 polls by coaches, media, players, agents, or marching band drum majors are utter BS. Nobody has even once watched half of the teams they're ranking. FBS just can't quit it's obsession with Top 25 polls and it's perverted the minds of millions of "college football" fans.

That's not really an answer to the question I asked. I'm not vouching for the veracity of human polling; I found multiple rankings on ESPN and wasn't sure which one was at the center of the complaint.
