Who shared the names? Looks like decently successful head coaches at private D2, D3, and NAIA schools. I'll be honest, I'm not sure Mercyhurst pays enough to attract good D2 head coaches. Tom Herman's a great guy - an Edinboro guy - but I don't see them hiring someone in their 70s. Private is good because managing a "discounting budget" is different than busting your hump to raise real scholarship dollars. But Mercyhurst is a hockey-first school in a basketball-first conference. That's not appealing to many used to ruling the roost, and that's before you consider they're playing D1 football with a D2 philosophy with D3 facilities.

I'd be astonished if Geiser would leave that set-up to, well, go to THAT set-up.

Darrell Revis' son committed to Mercyhurst.

          • Two new pieces of D1 news:

South Dakota HC Travis Johansen is expected to be hired as the new DC at Rutgers. Johansen was the DC at USD from 2019-2024 and was only the HC for one season. His old job (assuming he does leave) might be looking a bit more appealing next year because

NDSU is allegedly in talks to move up to the Mountain West as a football-only member.

No more national titles for them….

I get it, it's hard to not move up. But now they're relegated to nowhere bowls instead of the fun of a playoff run.

I’d bet they’ll be in the CFP within the next 5 years. Making a run in the playoff, yeah that’s tough. But they’ve done everything you can possibly do at the FCS level. It’s kind of college football purgatory.

I wish them well, and wonder how they will do at that level? I think in a few years they will at least win the conference.

I always find it awesome when former D2 schools move up. I wish IUP had done it in the 1980's or 1990's.

Their fanbase needs to get used to being a tiny fish in the big pond. The best they can do is maybe be the 12 seed in the playoffs if everything goes their way. A flagship school in the Dakotastans can’t match the financial fire power of the real FBS elite.

                      • As of right now, NDSU doesn't have to pay a penalty to the Missouri Valley Conference for leaving, but they had to pay $5 million to the NCAA to reclassify as FBS and an additional $12 million to join the Mountain West as an associate member for football. That's in addition to the scholarship changes. Why are they doing football only?

Since 2023, FBS now requires 16 NCAA sports with a minimum scholarship allotment of 210 total full scholarship equivalencies and must award at least $6 million in annual athletic scholarships. Football will eat up half that number but will have to add two sports and award 105 scholarships across 15 sports.

To respond to IUPbigINDIANS, NDSU won't be bowl or CFP eligible until 2028.

FWIW, for all their football success, since moving up to Division I, no NDSU team has made it past the national tournament Sweet 16 for any sport.

Probably because it makes more sense for NDSU to keep the rest of their teams in the Summit League, which is more geographically compact than the Mountain West. It's not like the Summit sponsors football (even though they're a stakeholder in the Missouri Valley Football Conference) and Northern Illinois already set that precedent (football in MW, all other sports in the Horizon League).

What's interesting is that Northern Illinois only had to pay a $2 million application fee to NDSU's $12 million.

Perhaps NIU got a discount because they signed on early, instead of waiting 'til the MWC put out the details of their new media deal(s).

                              • Rutgers is reportedly hiring another FCS HC away from his job, this time from Drake. I suppose if the season goes south and Schiano gets canned they won’t be lacking for interim options.
