There have been a few unconventional hires so far. Stanford hiring the guy from Sacramento State is also surprising. I imagine there are some uppity Stanford alumni clutching the quilted napa leather in their Range Rover about hiring someone from a lowly FCS state school.

Imagine doing all the work it takes to make a winning season happen and you get “rewarded” with a trip to Mobile or Frisco. There are too many bowls.

Towson used to be a good rivalry for IUP. The Marching Band got raucous at their field and got Towson all mad.

At that time, I believe the Towson President was an IUP grad. I thought it was a somewhat prestigious rivalry because it got us a lot of media attention in Maryland and further. It was a good rivalry, as was the Nebraska-Omaha series until UNO went D1 and dropped football. Now we have SRU, Shepherd, and Ashland. Still interesting, IMO.

They should be glad to go to any bowl. When I was a kid, Northwestern had a team under Ara Parseghian that was No. 1 for several weeks before encountering multiple injuries. They still finished 7-2 for the year — and stayed home. If you wanted to go bowling in the Big 10, you had to win the conference. That was it.

80 percent of the bowls today are played in half empty lifeless stadiums.

In those days the bowls decided the final
poll. Nobody wants people voting on a champion.

Bowls are the past and playoffs are now and the future.

These lower schools racing to be in FBS is a joke.

About once a year when somebody mentions IUP moving up ... it's so ludicrous.

The lone benefit to these 'who cares' bowl games is the extra couple weeks (or more) of practice time.

But, overall, it's now basically just pimping players out to fill TV spots.

Some of them do put on a nice week for the players.

A lot of schools that used to be in D2 were stupid to do so..it worked out for some who are in FCS. However those schools will
                    never be basketball national champions.

                    IUP should never move up.

So sad. What a character. In a profession dominated by unlikeable, dull corporate suits he was just a real guy. Fun to watch and listen to.

                        • Some of my favorite Mike Leach trivia:

                          - He didn't play college football.

                          - He was obsessed with pirates.

                          - He had a cameo in the Friday Night Lights series (and ad-libbed his lines about swinging your sword and finding your inner pirate)

                          - He was an attorney. He earned a JD from Pepperdine University.

                          - He wrote a book on Geronimo (https://www.amazon.com/Geronimo-Lead.../dp/1476734933)

                          - He has taught a college class on "insurgent warfare"

                          • I always respected Leach for trying to win and do it his his way instead of giving in to popular demand on how his teams should be. Doubly so for doing it at places that were either has-beens like WSU, also-rans like MSU, or never-was like TTU. Sad to hear the news.

                            • If you haven't watched Deion's first team meeting at Colorado ... take 15 minutes and do so.

                              It was awesome.

If he can coach (with a good staff) he's going to do terrific there. Big recruits are going to flock to Boulder.

When you tell the players you're inheriting to jump in the portal to make more room ... that is hilarious.

I was talking about bowls, and nobody voted on what bowl you went to in those days. If you were the Big Ten champion you went to the Rose Bowl. Didn't matter if you were ranked 1st or 21st. And the conference had much better overall balance then. The playoffs might well be a better way to pick a national champion (if they have a true playoff), but in the end it's all about big money these days. The media hype of the current four-team playoff has just made a few powerful teams all that much bigger.
