Follow up to the Penn State campus closures. Dubois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango, Wilkes-Barre and York seem to be on the chopping block, although the PSU board still has yet to formally vote on it.

Penn State is closing its DuBois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango, Wilkes-Barre and York campuses. Just 3.5% of the total enrollment but they are a combined $15M in annual losses. Woof. Fayette is not far from Cal's campus. Cal costs thousands less than Penn State Fayette. Mont Alto has lost its purpose after the forestry program was moved to State College. DuBois and Shenango were glorified community education centers.
There's still opportunities for someone to come in and retool these campuses for more immediate needs of the local communities. Most of these areas could use a technically-minded community college featuring GED programs, dual enrollment for high schools, and vocational education. Not a tech school, not a community college. The high school vo-tech model for adults. And the price has to be right because not one of these communities is thriving.

New Kensington is interesting. As far as PSU 'branch-type' campuses go, its not too bad.Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View PostPenn State is closing its DuBois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango, Wilkes-Barre and York campuses. New Kensington obviously has a terrible reputation but the campus is far from downtown (like 5-6 miles). It's very close to where ALCOA was once headquartered.

They've made some momentum to try to spur economic development in downtown New Ken, but its still New Ken. There's nothing going on around there.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

Yep, somebody got paid for that.
At least the IUP jingle at the time was better..
”We’re planning for your future..At IUP”.
New Ken was once a booming place. It was called "Little Chicago" and was largely run by organized crime. That, ironically, was the safest the town ever was. The 'Goodfellas' ran the town and essentially policed it, too.

Move to Packer Park in South Philly..most immaculate neighborhood. It’s adjacent to the sports complex. Pretty much the mob neighborhood…and don’t move there and let your house look like 💩.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View Post

Good article on the Penn State branch closures with some strong quotes from Penn professor Julie Wollman, who was president of Edinboro 2012-2016 (and Widener after).
"Over time, the mission of land-grant institutions like Penn State was conceptualized to include extension services in agriculture and mechanics, but there was no mission or plan to develop branch campuses, said Julie Wollman, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education."

The quotes from Jay Paterno are laughable in their vagueness. Words like “innovate” and “invest” sound nice but unless the reporter did an absolute hatchet job on Paterno’s answers there is no substance on what innovation would mean or how money should be “invested.” At least Wollman provided concrete ideas such as collaboration with nearby PASSHE schools although that’s not really innovative as it’s certainly been done before.Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View PostGood article on the Penn State branch closures with some strong quotes from Penn professor Julie Wollman, who was president of Edinboro 2012-2016 (and Widener after).

Yes. They should have only one campus. The state system serves everything else. But you know this all came about because too many Centre County alumni got into gubmint and steered money their way.Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View PostGood article on the Penn State branch closures with some strong quotes from Penn professor Julie Wollman, who was president of Edinboro 2012-2016 (and Widener after).
