IUP didn't ask for money to renovate an aging facility. They asked for money to build a revenue-centered events center with a basketball arena. Semantics but important. But also IUP got state (and I believe federal) funding to assist.Originally posted by IUPNation View Post
The point is…Harrisburg forced IUP to fund raise the KCAC before they’d give their pittance donation. Didn’t IUP pay it off themselves?
Yet the Angelo Dome was gifted to the Mon Vslley…Clarion..a school that can barely make a case for its continued existence had their field houses gutted and renovated. Now we have more consolidated schools getting facilities renovated.
I want to know why IUP never gets this gravy train? Why was IUP forced to pony up for the KCAC that has proven beneficial to its community but the state pays to build or renovate white elephants?
Make it make sense…
IUP has used it's state facilities money on academic buildings and demolitions. Edinboro and Clarion have pretty clean and modern academic buildings so they asked for this money.
Visit McComb and you'll see that it needs it. No air conditioning. 70s pastel subway tile everywhere. Aging metal bleachers. Terrible air ventilation in the lower level where most offices and lockers are located. Some rooms were subdivided in the early 80s with wood paneling and accordion dividers. It doesn't host the Harlem Globetrotters or Donald Trump cult revivals, but it's the most used facility in NWPA for high school sports and hosts 1-2 high school graduations annually.

Didn’t IUP have to fund raise a certain amount before the state kicked in their share and the project could go forward? That’s how I remember it but that’s not the deal Angelo was given…Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View Post

IUP had to match $20 million to get $20 million from the state. And from a Republican governor, at that!Originally posted by IUPNation View Post

Angelo went against an internal study that suggested an arena 40% smaller then broke an agreement with Harrisburg to raise $10-12 million before breaking ground. He also pushed for some lavish details that drove it $5-6 million over budget. Then he came crying to Harrisburg and got $15 million in emergency funding. But wait, there's more! Armenti then borrowed $20 million to build a parking garage - one that ended up being shoddily built. When he was fired, Cal was paying $7 million a year in debt payments, $2 million just on their arena.

And they named Armenti to the 75th Anniversary list of "Distinguished Keystones." Absolutely incredible.Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View Post

Lavish? Their arena looks like a warehouse on the inside from the pictures…what was lavish?Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View Post

The over night in the hotel for the Spocks looks even worse now…..
Pennsylvania Western University plans to furlough more than a dozen employees at its California and Clarion campuses as it manages financial and enrollment strains, according to a union representing university employees.

They are both starting to follow the path of Urbana or AB (i.e. a huge percentage of their enrollment is athletes).
Clarion, my opinion, is the nicest it has ever been. But, it's out there. You're isolated. The winters are bad. The town is way better than California but that's still pretty limited. It's never going to be easy attracting kids from urban schools to go up there.
I had a huge number of high school friends go there. I spent a lot of weekends there. It was a booming little place back then.
