I think the foundational issues affecting PennWest and Commonwealth override whoever is running the show in each one. I don't perceive that the University President has much freedom to change the direction of things. That authority lies in Harrisburg. The president is a middleman.

Yeah, we're facing declining numbers of students, probably an overabundance of colleges in Pa., increasing expenses, a state legislature that isn't the most supportive in the world, and a federal administration that has gleefully embarked on a path of hollowing out university research and crapping on public education in general. It's not going to be an easy path forward.

My point is that these types of incremental changes you suggest will not have any noticeable impact on the direction of the schools. The "market forces" are the power. Administrative actions will have virtually no impact.

It's a fair point. The only thing that gets the momentum turned around is bold, aggressive recruitment. No platitudes in marketing. Straight stats on why choose Penn West over 150 other options. If they're unwilling or unsuccessful, then they're toast.

Fewer buyers and a ton of options. Selling the non-athletes is going to be very difficult.

That is a huge black eye for Penn State. It made the national news last night. Apparently some of the frats that were banned from campus for bad behavior in the past have simply set up shop off campus and just continued doing the same crap, or worse, than they have in the past.

That is a huge black eye for Penn State. It made the national news last night. Apparently some of the frats that were banned from campus for bad behavior in the past have simply set up shop off campus and just continued doing the same crap, or worse, than they have in the past.

Its a complete cluster. There are SEVENTY frats & sororities at Penn State. Most sororities have agreements to rent an entire floor and a chapter meeting room in the dorms. Over FOURTY frat houses owned by the alumni corporations off campus on private property without any sort of direct university oversight (a few are on private property completely surrounded by campus). A dozen or so are operating with their national office's blessing but no university recognition. The town's zoning on frat houses doesn't require university approval, which is a big problem. No university oversight means they give up IFC rush, dance marathon, etc. but just need to keep from getting caught.

Perhaps, but one organized by frats and with pledges required to bundle cocaine as part of their initiation? I don't know if I've seen that one before. And the Greek system at Penn State has been out of control for a long time. That said, I'm sure there are dealers sniffing around whenever you have that many young people in one place. I continue to be amazed by what people will put into their bodies by injection, snorting, or pills. With fentanyl and other lethal stuff out there, the drug scene is a lot more potent than in far distant days when I was in college. Fortunately for me, I never leaned into the drug scene. I went to too many pot parties where I saw smart people turn into gibbering idiots within an hour. But at least they were mostly mellow idiots.

The kid bought in to the operation for $18,000. Imagine how many kids at any PASSHE school have access to $18,000 to spend on getting into drug dealing.
