IUP Music is thrilled to announce that we have selected Dr. Will Sugg for our tenure-track position as Director of the IUP Marching Band, "The Legend," and Associate Director of Bands!

Dr. Sugg will continue the great work he began last fall as Interim Director of "The Legend," and is looking forward to leading our Drum Major and Leadership Academy from June 22-26 on the IUP campus.

We hope that you will join us in congratulating Dr. Sugg and hope to see you at our performances in the fall!

Indiana High still plays it.

That's the closest that song is ever getting to IUP.

How does IHS get away with that? I know in the past, there was a movement to try and rename them, but I guess it didn't go very far.

I personally see nothing wrong with Indians and Cherokee. We are in Indiana County PA.

There isn't a national entity that high school sports reports to and the PIAA isn't going to wade into those waters. There are SO many high schools in PA with indigenous/Native American nicknames, mascots, etc. I chuckled at Aliquippa having someone in a western-style head dress on a horse with a spear riding around on their beautiful new turf. And then the horse dropped a load on the turf.

The local private country club is named after a native american chief who lived in greater Pittsburgh, but not near where its located. The logo is also a template native american with the western style head dress of feathers. Aliquippa and this place are good examples - I think if the name is not disrespectful (i.e. Redskins) and the portrayal is more reflective of those who lived there before and not the John Wayne movie portrayal, there would be fewer complaints. I'm generally not a fan unless its truly a homage to the tribes from that specific area and shows. I'm against the use of Indians or Raiders (with NA logo).

But I'm team Cherokee. That's actually a pretty cool song in its old big band jazz form made better with a marching band.

The PIAA has not resorted to blackmail like the NCAA.......

However Neshaminy High School in langhorne, Bucks County had to change some things...and Neshaminy Mall used to have a big ole totem pole along Route 1.

Neshaminy High School athletic teams are known as the Skins. The prior mascot was the Redskins. In 2012, a Neshaminy parent of Native American descent started a campaign to change the name because of its racially offensive and harmful nature. This parent spoke at numerous board meetings, though Neshaminy made no progress toward a change. As a result, a complaint was filed with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC) in 2013. After a thorough investigation, the PHRC ruled against the Neshaminy School District, requiring the school to change its mascot. However, the school administration appealed PHRC's ruling.

On October 23, 2013, the student editorial board of the high school's newspaper, The Playwickian, stated its intention to no longer call the team "Redskin" in its publications.^[25] The school administration responded that the student editorial board lacked the power to make this decision.^[26] In 2014, newspaper staff members received awards from the Scholastic Keystone Press Awards contest and the Gold Circle Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for articles published in "The Playwickian" on the issue.^[19]

In May 2014, a student submitted an opinion editorial that contained the term "Redskin". The school's Principal McGee demanded that The Playwickian run the piece and threatened to withdraw the newspaper's final issue if its staff did not comply. The Playwickian ran its last issue of the year without the article. The principal confiscated the newspaper, calling for an emergency meeting with its co-editors and restricting access to The Playwickian's social media and website.^[27][28] Later, McGee defend his actions in a statement on the school's website.^[29] On June 26, 2014, the Neshaminy School Board gave The Playwickian authority to ban the term in articles, but required the paper to publish editorials and letters to the editor with the term present and unedited.^[30]

In 2015, the PHRC made a preliminary finding that the name Redskins is "racially derogatory" and creates a "hostile educational environment." The case then proceeded to a full committee hearing.^[31] After six years of controversy, the PHRC held a hearing in January 2019.^[32] In November 2019, the PHRC ruled that Neshaminy High School could continue to use the name but must cease using any imagery promoting negative stereotypes of Native Americans. In addition, PHRC required the school to teach its students about Native American history to prevent the use of stereotypes.^[33] Neshaminy School District spent over $400,000 in legal fees in its campaign to retain the Redskin nickname

My problem with the Redskins (NFL) is that the Washington Post ran an article that said something like 90% of Native Americans didn't mind the name. So, they changed their name to appease the ten percent. That is ridiculous.

I know in my hometown, North Hills is still the Indians, as is Penn Hills and West Allegheny.

I am also team Cherokee. I wonder why IUP didn't run with that?
