My problem with the Redskins (NFL) is that the Washington Post ran an article that said something like 90% of Native Americans didn't mind the name. So, they changed their name to appease the ten percent. That is ridiculous.

I know in my hometown, North Hills is still the Indians, as is Penn Hills and West Allegheny.

I am also team Cherokee. I wonder why IUP didn't run with that?

But some schools got to keep everything if they could bribe their way out of it....so the NCAA blackmailed the poor schools and didn't enforce anything with schools with the cash...looking at you Flori-duh State.

The relationship between the Seminole tribe and the the Unversity is a bit different from say the generic "Indians" or "Redskins." There is quite a bit more depth and respect between the 2 and that's why they didn't change their name. FSU I would not consider a school flush with cash either if you compare it to the rest of the NIL landscape too.

I know Ben Avon well. I grew up in Avalon and attended Northgate. Our rivals were the lopes, at least than.

I understand that argument but there's also the "you can't be kind of pregnant" theory. You are or you aren't.

End of the day it doesn't really keep me awake worrying about the Big Indians nickname. Crimson Hawks has grown on me. Sure, I'd prefer the Big Indians but it's not the end of the world.

Of course, I've already accepted it's never changing back so it's really not worth stressing about.

At IUP, there's almost some irony to the change. That was a different time and much different version of IUP in those days. The Crimson Hawks kind of symbolizes the new era - for better or worse. I doubt IUP will ever be like 'that' IUP again. That's not entirely a bad thing, either.

I think they should have set some clear guidelines, most of which I've already mentioned:

1) Immediate C&D on all derogatory nicknames & imagery: Redskins, Savages, Red Raiders, Indians, etc. An unpopular opinion is that Chief Wahoo would have failed the first test.

2) Any name must reference a specific tribe or a role within a tribe (Chiefs, Warriors, Braves, etc.).

3) Any specific tribe used must have the endorsement of that tribe. The prime example is Florida State. This has backfired on schools like North Dakota. Illinois has a loophole because the Illinois nation no longer exists.

4) Any visual portrayals must be historically accurate to the specific region of that school. No Hollywood stereotypes of western people for a school in Virginia.

5) The Tomahawk Chop is banned immediately. It was cool in 1992 but now its annoying and cringy.

I think there was maybe a bit of vindictiveness on the part of the NCAA on top of the money difference in that case. Not that UND wasn’t antagonistic towards the NCAA in their defense of their name and logo too. In a different example of money factors, the Cleveland Guardians still maintain the Chief Wahoo trademark and sell a small amount of hats with the last version of the logo. The PR reason is to make it more difficult for anyone else to use it in unofficial products.
