Just got back from the game. It wasn't pretty but a win is a win. The ROCK got hammered in most stats but the one that counts. They will need to play better if they hope to contend.

That was a great game (watched at home). First game rust for both teams. In hindsight, UMD's coach made two decisions that I'm questioning: the replay challenge on the lateral pass (it was in their direction so they should have been able to tell) which they lost and lost their timeout for that OT session, and the decision to go for 2 on the second OT touchdown. Those two things sealed their fate.

Don’t you have to go for two if you score a td in the second OT?Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View PostThat was a great game (watched at home). First game rust for both teams. Given that SRU also went for two when an XP would have been enough for the win, I'm pretty sure you're right.Originally posted by Chuck Norris View Post

The non hitting and tackling during summer camp is the most ridiculous theory I've ever heard. Not only is tackling something that needs practiced, but it also gets your body ready for the season. I hate to be that grouchy old man, but they barely have any double sessions anymore. When I played in high school, we had double sessions every day starting August 1 until the week of the first game. The one year I played in college we had triple sessions for 2 weeks - every freaking day.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View PostThe lack of tackling in camp is turning the first game into a whirlwind.

Cumulative sub-concussive hits during drills and practice increase the long-term risk of brain trauma. Even the NFL limited full-contact practices in its collective bargaining agreements. Professional teams now average fewer than one full-contact practice per week.Originally posted by Big__Tasty View Post

I was glad to see East Stroudsburg got off on the right foot this season. (Just as importantly they didn’t have their game end in a questionable, weather-related no contest; I know all about that now.) The Warriors flubbed their opener against Edinboro last year (to be fair partly because the Fighting Scots were surprisingly solid in 2025) and it threw ESU’s entire season off IMO…
One other semi-related note - I have East Stroudsburg (and also Bloomsburg and IUP) identified as favorites in my ESPN.com account, and the ESU/Seton Hill game score was kept reasonably up to date during the game in the app rather than only being posted after the game was over. I don’t know if that was a one time thing or broader, improved D2 score tracking by ESPN, but it was a pleasant surprise.

I think the biggest faux paus by UMD coaching staff was going for it when it was 4 and 11, the strip sack scoop and score. There is 3 and 1/2 minutes left, you are up 2 scores, your opponent has used all their timeouts. You punt and try to pin them down, if it goes in the end zone , they get at the 20 and have to score twice.
I watched the entire game and even today I'm still finding it hard to believe the ROCK won. 0 for 10 on third downs. Less.than hundred yards rushing, yes they got 3 turnovers, but only scored points off of last one.

Never going to win a challenge at SRU as a visting team in crunch time, found that out last year.Originally posted by Fightingscot82 View PostThat was a great game (watched at home). I didn't see the game, but I was really surprised to read they went for a fourth and 11 in that situation. Even thought UMD was having a great rushing game, that's a lot to ask. Yeah, attempting the coffin corner punt would seem like a better call.Originally posted by SRU 88 View PostI think the biggest faux paus by UMD coaching staff was going for it when it was 4 and 11, the strip sack scoop and score. Yeah, and since recent testing showed that about 25 percent of former NFL players tested have evidence of CTE disease, I think you'll see those limits continue.Originally posted by Bart View Post

I think it was less about the venue and more about being a really bad challenge. Even if they were in Duluth that one wasn't going their way.Originally posted by Ram040506 View Post
