Special teams killed Ship. Got an extra point blocked and their punt returner caught the ball inside the 10-yard line twice when the ball was clearly headed for the end zone and the kickoff returner also fumbled one and got nailed deep. I think they started from their own 5-yard line four times in the first half. Also, freshman experience started to show up in the second half, especially in QB play. Was a little surprised to see Roman Jensen get the QB start over the hyped Alex Erby, but I wouldn't be surprised if several QBs were rotated through this year as the top three are all redshirt frosh. Jensen threw a nice pass at times, but showed his inexperience by hanging on to the ball too long on some of his dropbacks. I expected a little more flash from the offense under young offensive coordinator Brayden Long. They were very conservative on first down with mostly handoffs up the middle, and they really seemed to fall in love with the quarterback option series, which wasn't working much at all the second half. As was the case last year, they also seem to lack breakaway speed in the backfield, which doesn't help. To be fair, the lousy field position didn't enable them to run their whole offense at times. I thought the line play was decent, considering no seniors on the o-line and two freshmen on the d-line. It's going to be a long home season for Ship with IUP, Kutztown, East Stroud, and Shepherd coming up.

Lock Haven had a couple of nice pieces, but I wasn't particularly impressed with them as Ship all but handed them points on a platter with some of the special team gaffes. The Bald Eagles might compete with the bottom part of the West, but I think they'll be in huge trouble against the top dogs.

Yes, Erby's hyped, and yes, I was stunned to see Roman Jensen at QB. And for those keeping score at home, Ship started a drive inside its own 6 on five occasions. I think Jensen did a pretty solid job (20-29-0, 266 yds, 2 TD) for the time he was provided.

Have to wonder if Ethan Arneson is hurt; no sign of him at RB.

And did Robert Footman Jr. lose his QB spot at Haven faster than he lost his QB spot at Millersville?

Yeah, I didn't think it was a bad first game for Jensen. He's inexperienced and needs to get that internal clock that veteran QBs have and get rid of the ball before he eats it. I thought they might get Erby or someone else in for a couple of plays the second half, but I guess they wanted to see what Jensen could do. I don't know about Arneson. I thought the Jones kid looked interesting at RB on a couple of plays and would have liked to see a little more of him. They just don't have a breakaway back at the moment who can loosen up a defense.

And Footman might indeed have lost a job. That Nagle kid came in and really zipped the ball. Lock Haven seemed smoother with him running the show.

Before everyone gets on board the Jumping Jack U Hype Train ... they beat Post. Post is almost as bad as WVW, if not worse.

Let's see how WVW fares against an actual team.

It appears Davenport built a 3 touchdown cushion and then coasted in the 4th quarter.

I didn’t see this until just now, but William Jewell vs. Fort Lewis was suspended and ultimately called after Jewell’s starting RB collapsed on the sideline and later died.

                  Tragic.

ya i agee that Post isn't a good program BUT they are nowhere near the low's that WVWC has seen the last few years. Post is a team that has a handful of wins the last few years and flirted with being a .500 team just last year. Oh, and they've also played WVWC the last two years and outscored them 92-38 in that stretch....with most of WVWC points coming in garbage time. those games were not competitive. No one is going to expect them to beat Charleston to win the conference but to completely flip the script and dominate a team that has destroyed them the last couple years is a huge turnaround. First win since 2022 season, massive for that program and gives Kellar instant creditability there (not that he didn' already have it)

Ship has to play WVWC on Sept. 10 and with the lack of experience on our team this season I worried about the possibility that Ship might be the team to break their losing streak. However that game goes, at least I don't have that to worry about now.

I read in the Lock Haven paper this morning that they'll make a decision this week on QB. I've got a hard time believing Nagle won't be the starter moving forward. Once he took over, the Bald Eagles looked like a completely different team - all around. The Haven defense was atrocious on Ship's first drive. I really thought we were in some deep sheeit until we scored right before the half.

It was my first time at Shippensburg. Really nice facilities, easy parking close to the stadium. I went on a game day visit with my son to D1 Delaware State last fall. Shippensburg's stadium is way nicer than DSU's. Campus is nicer too. The only downfall is that I forgot to put on sunscreen and my head looks like a tomato today. It was a beautiful day for football. I little toasty, but not horrible.

We've got AIC up in Mass next Saturday. I'm not touching I95 on Labor Day weekend, so I'll be watching the stream. I'm loving college football being back.

Glad you enjoyed visiting. I thought we had a nice crowd for the opener and Lock Haven had a good turnout considering the location of the school. I thought the constantly bad field position Ship had in the first half really killed the momentum they had from the scoring drive. I like our new coach, but he's got a lot of work ahead of him, and this season isn't going to be pretty.

I'm not sure that they'll be a threat to a team like Ship just yet....we'll find out a little more about them this Thursday. nonetheless that was a really impressive opening win for a program that desperately needed it.

Well, we'll know soon. I saw some positive things out of some of Ship's young players Saturday, but you can't really say any game is in the bag given their level of turnover going into this season. I see a few games where we can probably be competitive and even win with a break or two. The home schedule is ridiculous. Lock Haven was probably the easiest home opponent Ship will have this year.

I'm now convinced that Mike Kellar's goal is to coach every single team in the MEC before he retires. Wasn't he recently at Glenville State?
