  • CIAA cancels football for 2020-21 school year

There will be no CIAA football at all for this 2020-21 school year as the conference foregoes a spring season.

NCAA requires extensive testing for contact activities. That will be considerable cost for football. Cross Country canceled probably because most also do Outdoor Track.

Soooo.........the clock's ticking, how many players will ultimately decide to transfer to programs which will begin playing games next spring? What does this mean for the Seniors and recruits? There could be some changes that could effect teams for a while, no doubt.

Real possibilities if such transfers are allowed. However, that would be a big gamble for some just to play an abbreviated season in a new system.

No football! It's always about lack of money.

Absolutely. With the requirements the NCAA has in place, not to mention what some state governments have put in place, it will become very expensive to have college athletics this year (even more so than normal). You have already seen a lot of schools cut athletic programs, including some big name programs with respected programs. One of these is the Iowa Swim and Dive teams, who were supposed to host the NCAA D1 meet this season. Dropped the program following this season as a cost cutting measure and lost the championship hosting duties. I suspect they won't mind considering costs won't be compensated for by attendance.

The simple fact is, very few smaller school programs are going to be make it without significant financial stress from the COVID-19 outbreak. Not offering football this year will cut as much out of the expenses as can be cut. This basically limits the expenses to salaries and scholarships for 2020-2021.

Where there will be an issue, and a logjam is incoming freshman vs returning should have used eligibility seniors. some major schools have already said the door is open, please exit through it due to COVID-19 cancellations, not allowing the NCAA's eligibility waiver (Wisconsin is the biggest) for spring sport seniors who lost most of their last season when spring sports got cancelled.

Coaches have to be very careful how they treat seniors who have that last year of eligibility remaining. You boot most of them out it'll hurt future recruiting as HS coaches won't be pushing for their kids to sign with your school due to lack of commitment from the coaching staff with honoring scholarships.

School football programs which have a strong well funded established booster programs in place should survive. Those schools more dependent on athletic funds as a part of tuition, or federal / state support may be in real trouble. I can think of three CIAA school's football programs which may not rebound from what is presently going on, including canceling the full calendar year season.

I would concur with you here. A few players had transferred before COVID, but you are seeing an acceleration of that trend after COVID forced the CIAA's hand. Here are a few transfers since last year:

JCSU LB/S Kyaire Bynum (to Carson-Newman) - He was a leading tackler for the Golden Bulls in 2018, but was injured last season.
Lincoln S Kenan Reid (to BCS Rutgers) - Among Lincoln's passing game defensive struggles, he was a shining light
Shaw WR Daniel Bender (unknown) - Shaw's gamebreaker WR takes a pass on sitting out
Virginia Union RB Tabyus Taylor (unknown) - VUU's rushing threat and the 2018 NCAA all purpose yardage leader was originally going to opt into the draft. He couldn't get a pro-day, so he petition and was successful in getting his eligibility back. Now, he's looking for a new home, as he too passes on sitting out.
