Worked at UWF for a number of years, and homecoming is always date-driven, and the opponent isn't really a consideration. Its always fallen in October, generally mid-October. Before football, it was always a soccer doubleheader that fell around mid-October. Didn't really select the date around an opponent. This line of thinking could change as a football homecoming tradition continues to develop.

The school chooses the date for homecoming. In the past, it didn't matter if the opponent was Shorter or Delta or whomever, once there was a home contest in mid-October, that was homecoming. So the conference sets the schedule dates, then the school goes out and assigns "special days" to the home games, such as Military appreciation or in this case Homecoming.
