  • GSC Scheduling

Looks like DSU and UWA are having trouble with scheduling this fall, an ongoing issue for the top teams in the conference.

    From Football Scoop:

Delta State (D-II - MS): Delta State in Cleveland MS is looking for a week 1 game for the 2022 season. Open to FCS,D2,NAIA or D3. There may also be a Guarantee for the right opponent.

West Alabama (D-II): West Alabama is looking for opponents for weeks 2 (9/10) and 3 (9/17) for the Fall 2022 season. The same weeks in 2023 are open as well. Willing to discuss home and home or one year games.
    Go GSC and Roar LIONS!!

      NCAA has "my head swimming".
They should be swimming to the aid of D2 sports!

            Good points all.
I can't put much faith in the GSC fixing anything.... after all, this is the crowd that saddled GSC fans with FloSports. Many of us have seen our last televise GSC game because of that "relationship"
Emelle says FloSports must have some mighty interesting pictures of somebody in Birmingham.

Sadly, that's already the case. Even sadder is that the teams on the schedule keeping them out of the playoffs are teams they've been scheduling for the last 50 years.

How can the conference fix it without viable candidates? It's not like the GSC can force teams to add football.

Last year we played Albany St. Savannah State and Virginia Union. Some years we play Fort Valley.

The SIAC has now Edward Waters, Savannah St., Albany St., Morehouse, Fort Valley, Benedict, Clark Atlanta, Miles, Kentucky St., Lane, Tuskegree, Central State.

Why not reach out to several of the schools for games?

Yeah, and they have no incentive to lose to multiple GSC teams per year, because they have enough people in their conference to meet their scheduling needs. Obviously, the most sustainable solution for the GSC is to expand by having quality established programs come on board. I personally believe that the extreme success by our Florida start ups are a once in a generation fluke, and we can't hope for that to be our model for football expansion.

A very good friend of mine was a grad assistant in the Lee athletic department a couple years ago (1-2). He said that they (trustees, etc) had a meeting about football, and that the school did not move forward because "of the culture that football would bring to campus". That was his exact words.

When I was doing my grad work at UM, it was focused on arts (which I loved) and not athletics. That has changed a bit but not enough to support football.

The GSC should look to D3 and NAIA schools in the region that have football like Faulkner, Huntingdon, Reinhardt, LaGrange, Point, Belhaven, etc.
