McKendree vs #14 West Florida

Were you surprised how little (really none) Stokes was able to get outside and scramble or make big plays with his feet? I thought that was a huge part of his game. Maybe I just was mislead by what I saw in his few plays last season?

The last two years the Argos ran a lot of designed QB run plays with Pee Wee and Stokes came in to mainly run because he was quicker than PeeWee.

The game plan against McKendree looked to rely on the run game and get rid of ball quickly when passing in the pocket. There were no designed QB run plays or rollout pass plays. The only time Stokes ran outside the pocket was when he was chased out by defenders.

The offensive plays were a lot like the early Argo Shinnick style of run up between the tackles with a lot of short to medium quick release sideline and slant routes to WR and let them turn a short route into a big gain with a broken tackle.

During last drive of game they went empty backfield with 4 and 5 wide to let Stokes throw deep and he connected on a deep sideline route to the 1 yard line.

I think the game plan was to get the QB comfortable and to have success with the short routes and the run game and open it up later when the victory was in hand. I imagine the game plan will have more passing against the stiff run defense of West Alabama in the next game. We also may see more plays where they use Stokes running ability because it’s so hard to run against West Alabama up the middle.
