Under the present situation, to me, it would make sense for this forum have a split title be it Conference Carolina’s / GSC or GSC / Conference Carolina’s. The conferences seem to be intertwined for at least the next couple of seasons.

I had a nice conversation yesterday with an ole friend affiliated with Conference Carolinas. He told me that surprisingly, Conference Carolinas got its start around 95 years ago, and has included teams such as East Carolina, Appalachian State, D2 Lenoir Rhyne, Wingate, and others over the years.

In recent years, by not having a football conference it's football playing schools were for the most part at the mercy of alliances, scheduling agreements, non-conference affiliations, and competing as independents. The teams were spread around with alliances with multiple conferences including The GSC, The SAC, The MEC, The CIAA. A lot of the Conference Carolinas teams were very competitive in those conferences.

Then in 2023, Conference Carolinas expanded it's football membership to the point of being recognized by the NCAA as a D2 Football Conference (after 50 years since last featuring football) starting in 2025. This year, Conference Carolinas will feature some well seasoned experienced talented programs with well respected coaching staffs, some of which I anticipate as being a lot stronger D2 competitors than some expect. It should be a very interesting year in SR2.

Conference Carolinas (known as the CIAC at the time) ended football sponsorship in 1975, when the SAC started as a football-only conference, uniting the four remaining CIAC football members (Catawba, Elon, Lenoir–Rhyne, Mars Hill) with Carson–Newman, Gardner–Webb, Newberry, and Presbyterian. The four (plus later SAC addition Wingate) were still in the CIAC off and on until the SAC became an all-sports conference in 1989.

The CIAC completed its move from NAIA to D2 in 1995, two years after the SAC. Upon adding Longwood (who'd been a D2 independent for several years after their previous conference collapsed), the conference added "Virginia" to its name, becoming the CVAC. It adopted the name "Conference Carolinas" in 2007, four years after Longwood left for D1, and has kept the name despite a growing number of non-Carolina members which began with King (TN) in 2012 and now stands at five (King, Emmanuel, Shorter, Young Harris, Ferrum).
