  • GAC MVP award

Maybe they should add "GAC MVP" to the yearly awards.

On the D2 Region 4 show this week, the guys were talking about Harding and commented that Clark Griffin may be the most underrated Defensive player in D2 - and I think you could make that argument. That comment also got me thinking.

You could also make the argument that the most overall (either side of the ball) underrated player in D2 is Cole Keylon. The winningest QB in the history of the GAC, with an 11-0 in conference record and the driver of the regular season #2 scoring offense and #3 total offense in all of D2, this season....wasn't an all GAC first team selection - and he never has been.

I understand how the QB position is traditionally graded...and Edward's absolutely grades out.

But if in rating the performance of a QB over a season - you also considered how well that QB ran his offence, and what he meant to that offense (and team) over the course of the season - Keylon is also hard to argue against. If he isn't the best QB in the conference using the traditional grading metrics....he is the GAC MVP.

In a traditional voting sense, I think Andrew Miller should have been GAC POTY and would also get my vote for league MVP. I'm kinda shocked he didn't get it.

The "what constitutes First Team QB" question has been going on for years. I remember when it was Gage Porter vs. Edwards for that spot and they went with Porter. Seems like it swings back and forth.

Keylon is certainly very valuable to Harding and what they do. I would argue in the GAC this season they probably could have played their backup QB for the full year and still been 11-0 or 10-1 at worst. I think they'll probably do that next year without him too.

That's not a dig at Keylon, more of a compliment to the machine Harding has built. Hard to name one Harding individual as MVP. Keylon has had a great career and won a ton of games.

That’s always the challenge for a truly effective Flexbone QB. If you run it well, you’ll never be Offensive POY. It’s like naming a defensive player as the conference MVP. Lots of tackles and TFLs are just not as sexy a stat as TDs and Passing Yards in today’s game. It’s only folks who are really into football (offense and defense) who understand the value of offensive lineman, defensive players and Flexbone QBs.

When Pitt ran the veer, we always heard "well he's not a true QB"

I thought it was appropriate to bring this thread back to the top of the GAC group of threads. Nothing's changed.

I realize in a traditional sense MVP is usually a RB or QB award for guys who put up big numbers, but if there were an award to what player is most valuable to his team or name one player if that player didn’t play would hurt his team the most I can’t imagine anyone in the country more valuable to their team than CK. The precision in which he runs this off and the rarity he has of making bad reads is really pretty phenomenal. And on top of that the kid is just a winner.
