    Re: Ashland vs. IUP

"Looking" tougher is one thing, and has a certain importance. The more practical story here is that anyone who thinks their team has a shot at the playoffs absolutely wants every non-conference win we can get. Those wins impact SOS. What happens in conference is moot...that math always settles to around (or exactly on) .500. So, to bolster SOS #'s we need every win over a unique, non-GLIAC, D2 foe we can muster.

Wow. ODU beats Ashland. Yikes. Ashland playoff hopes pretty much over.

AU fans were singing the same tune when Owens made the decision to go with Tarnowski over Chapman 4 years ago. How did that work out for the Eagles? I would say pretty good. Coach Owens and his staff have been evaluating QB's for a very long time and if they believe Brenner gives us the best chance to win then then they are going to go with him. Think about it. We have 3 freshman offensive lineman starting and so far our QBs have had zero protection. Brenner is the fastest QB Owens has had at AU. For example when the pocket broke down in the 1st qtr he scrambled for a 30 yard TD run. Davies is a big pocket passer and cannot run like Brenner. I thought he made some nice throws tonight in the monsoon but he has to protect the football. That fumble did however killed us and gave them the go ahead score so he needs to learn to protect ball. 196 yards in the wind and rain, plus 40 yards on the ground and a TD is not to bad for his first start against a tough opponent on the road. One thing I do also want to point out is the penalties tonight. AU year in and out is one of the least penalized teams in the country and the holding calls/ personal fouls were drive killers tonight but we should probably blame those on Owens as well. No matter who is at QB for us we knew this year we would have some growing pains with the young oline. Our D is good enough to keep us in games and we just need to find a way to get the offense going. Got to keep the faith.

Yes that was rough. Couple bad turnovers and a punt returned for a TD put the nail in the coffin. It would be nice to eventually experience some greater playoff success like teams in the GLIAC have experienced, but few teams have had that great fortune.
