  • When does Hockey season begin?

Michigan Tech, under second year Head Coach Steve Olson, is now 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference. His record so far since being promoted to HC is 6-10 overall (.375) and 3-9 (.250) in the GLIAC. Next weekend is Ferris, albeit at a neutral site, but unless the Bulldogs are looking past the Huskies to Grand Valley the following week the outcome isn't in doubt and the record will continue to deteriorate.

The best case scenario for the remainder of the season is Tech hanging on to the Miner's Cup. But, in the meantime, there needs to be some serious discussion on campus about the direction of the football program, its leadership, and how to be competitive in the conference. New infrastructure at Sherman Field is welcome but fans come to a game, not necessarily a facility. We can, and should, celebrate great effort and individual accomplishments but the only thing that puts a smile on everyone's face is a victory. As we descend into a permanent losing culture, future victories are going to be infrequent.

This year's fortunes have been adversely affected by injuries to key players, including two of the four captains. For a program that historically isn't deep in skill, these kinds of injuries are devastating. Can't blame the coaching staff for that and we can only hope they can adapt. But injuries aren't the only contributor to a permanent losing culture.

Unfortunately for the football team, there will be a significant drop in interest as the weather gets worse, the losses mount, and we get closer to the drop of the first puck. Incidentally, the Hockey Huskies are a pre-season top 20 pick.
