Does Coach Annese have an actual shot at that job or is it just a pipe dream for Michigan D2 fans?

Its a joke based on local radio host(whose son is on the Ferris roster) always saying that MSU and now Michigan should hire Annese for the open job. I would be surprised if that happens but ya never know.Originally posted by Jerry Smith View PostDoes Coach Annese have an actual shot at that job or is it just a pipe dream for Michigan D2 fans?

If someone of the caliber of Tony Annesse were to make the jump to a Michigan or Michigan State, then I'd think a logical in-between stop would be at an FCS or Group of Six FBS program before getting the call to Ann Arbor or East Lansing.
Ask Northwest Missouri's Adam Dorrel how well his stint at FCS Abilene Christian went after he led Northwest to three national titles in four years.
On the flip side, the D2 to FCS to FBS path seemed to work out for Curt Cignetti (going from Indiana (Pa.) to FCS Elon to James Madison (who made the move from FCS to FBS during Cignetti's run in Harrisonburg) to Indiana (Ind.).
For that matter, that same progression (almost) worked out for Brian Kelly, who went from winning back-to-back national titles at Grand Valley to Central Michigan to Cincinnati to Notre Dame to LSU.Cal U (Pa.) Class of 2014

I don’t think it’s fair to lump AD into that. As Abilene itself was also transitioning to fcs. Michigan is pretty set up and ready to go.Originally posted by ctrabs74 View PostIf someone of the caliber of Tony Annesse were to make the jump to a Michigan or Michigan State, then I'd think a logical in-between stop would be at an FCS or Group of Six FBS program before getting the call to Ann Arbor or East Lansing.

Yea, Poor Brian Kelly I hope he can get by on his poor salary now. ( Almost?) sure.Originally posted by ctrabs74 View PostIf someone of the caliber of Tony Annesse were to make the jump to a Michigan or Michigan State, then I'd think a logical in-between stop would be at an FCS or Group of Six FBS program before getting the call to Ann Arbor or East Lansing.

So safe to assume if TA was the coach at Grand Valley, he would not experience the same success he has at Ferris? The problem with your assumption is that you act as if every player on Ferris' team is on the TIP program. They're not. A significant number of starting or contributing players are not there due to TIP.Originally posted by MrsThortonMelon View PostAt D 1 Annese wouold be forced to complete with the same number of scholarships as everyone else has. No TIPs program in D1...why SVSU has never made more of this is a mystery to me also.
Don't you guys have the Grand Valley pledge or something like that where you're giving out free scholly's to kids in west mich?

No not saying that at all. I am discussing what the deal at D1 would be. I cant speak for the numbers, just going by what I was told by a Ferris admin staffer. I think the pledge program is a take off from the state which applies to GVSU, SVSU, FSU, CMU, EMU and WMU. And GVSU does not have TIPs because GVSU does not offer associates degree programs...Ferris does....and btw,,,I am all for them....give the kids the education that works for them. GVSU is not elite, why they dont offer a few associate degree programs is beyond me.Originally posted by DawgUp View Post

Here’s what I found about the TIPS program in Michigan.
https://www.michigan.gov/mistudentai...entive-program
It would interesting to know if any of the FSU players are receiving financial assistance for their education through this. I’d be surprised if there were more than a few.
The Michigan TIPS program sounds very similar to the ARFuture grant program in Arkansas. I’m sure several states who adopted Medicaid expansion have similar programs.Last edited by OldBison; 12-25-2025, 03:31 PM.

For what it’s worth…..Several years ago after Ferris had made their deep run in the D2 basketball playoffs, I ran in to an athletic administrator at GVSU and asked why the GV b-ball program lagged behind Ferris. The answer was of the 12 players on the Ferris quad exactly 2 could qualify for entrance in to GV. Just repeating what I was told.https://www.d2football.com/images/forumextras/2026supporter.png[/IMG]
