  • GVSU Spring Game

2026 Spring Game was cold and windy but stayed dry. Coach Wooster started things off with a short but emphatic speech saying, and I paraphrase , this season wasn’t going to be the same old same old but a major step forward. Unusual at GV for the HC to give a pep talk before the game. I hope this is an omen of things to come.

Not much to see with their “new look” offense and no hard hitting allowed but that’s to be expected. Offense moved the ball fairly well through the air. Transfer receiver and transfer punter looked good and all four QB’s looked serviceable with Drogosh and Schuster taking most of the snaps. Drogosh got the nod to start the scrimmage but I don’t know if that’s a tell or just how it worked out for now. Sophomore QB Olejniczak and RS Freshman Plump saw action and both looked like they’re ready to play too. Defensive backfield looked a bit porous but it’s early. Wide outs have some speed and there’s experienced depth at tight end. It was mentioned while talking with someone “in the know” that we may see more of the long bomb again….I have mixed emotions about that and hope it’s not overdone. Twelve transfers in all with four adding to the offensive line (where most of the help is needed IMO).

I always enjoy going out to the Spring Game and have always considered it the start of the football season. More excited than usual due to some major turnover in the coaching staff and some transfers coming in. If you were there, perhaps you saw something else.

Thanks for the recap. Four transfers on the OL sounds encouraging. I'm glad they recognized that's where the biggest issue was last year and addressed it fully.

A transfer punter sounds interesting. Is Sundermann not back? He's one of the best punters in the country.

Sundermann was on the roster but not dressed. Didn’t look for him on the sideline. Perhaps still recovering from his injury or saving eligibility ??

If you still have the roster, can you list who the transfer players are who were on it?

          Tommy Donovan WR Illinois State
          Deshawn Lanier. WR Bowling Green
          Eddie Merrell TE Dakota State
          Daion Johnson WR Davenport
          Issac Tavo OL West Liberty
          Jelani Harbor OL Olivet
          Shawn Murphy OL Air Force
          Kyler Brunan OL Michigan State
          CJ Jones LB Iowa Western
          Carlo Aybar DL Davenport
          Alex Kasee K/P Ohio University

Tommy Donovan and Alex Kasee showed well in the scrimmage. Kasee boomed some punts but they started out low and then gained altitude…..could be a problem. Tommy Donovan showed speed and hands. Hard to tell what the O-line was doing.

I thought Coach said they got 12 in the portal but only 11 made the roster. I could be wrong on that.

Kyler Brunan and CJ Jones were on the team last year already.
