  • D2 draft history

It's been reported NFL scouts have been out to Hays already this year taking a look at DB Doyin Jibowu, which got me thinking about D2 schools with back-to-back NFL draftees.

Thought I'd share what I found and see if anybody knows of any others

    Missouri Western
    2012 Greg Zuerlein - K - 6th round 171 pick - Rams
    2013 David Bass - DE - 7th round 233 pick - Raiders

    West Texas A&M
    2009 Keith Null - QB - 6th round 196 pick - Rams
    2010 Eugene Sims - DE - 6th round 189 pick - Rams
    J'Marcus Webb - OT - 7th round 218 pick - Bears
    2011 Stephen Burton - WR - 7th round 236 pick - Vikings

    Washburn
    2007 Trey Lewis - DT - 6th round 185 pick - Falcons
    2008 Cary Williams - CB - 7th round 229 pick - Titans

I know this is a little farther back and the draft was longer back then, but Pitt State had Darryl Wren drafted in 1991 (3rd round), Ronnie West and Kendall Gammon drafted in 1992 (9th and 11th rounds), and Ronald Moore and Troy Wilson drafted in 1993 (3rd and 7th rounds).

Also, WRT highest drafted recently, MIAA category, John Brown was drafted higher than Williams or Desir and more recently than Williams.

Highest drafted ever was a guy named Terry Bradshaw, taken #1 overall in 1970. Jackson State had 2 players taken 4th and 6th overall, Walter Payton and Robert Brazile, in 1975. D2 wasn't created until 1973, but when it came around, LA Tech was the first Champion. Before that, the small schools played in small school bowls, and LA Tech was in them.

If you look at the drafts in the 70s and 80s; lots and lots of players from what we'd call now small schools were drafted. There certainly weren't as many what is now FBS schools as most then operated under DI-AA and D2 and a lot of schools in all divisions were independent outside of the standard conference structure we have now. I think NFL also went out and scouted in person a lot heavier as few schools were on any sort of media at the time.

Kingsville has had 8 1st round picks. That's pretty impressive.
