  • Gorillas vs Fluffy Cows With Enlarged Heads

Should be an interesting game. Fluffy cows lost to Angelo State, came back to beat angelo state and have beaten the blind nuns at Panhandle and North American which ironically is situated in the far south.

Pitt in their first game vs an 8-3 MIAA team did well with lots of obvious flaws and lost. Came back and beat a short handed MW and lost to an FCS school that FCWEH also lost to.

Gorilla Head Coach Wright inherited a pretty empty cupboard, heck entire pantry, upon his arrival. Lots of young kids are playing, learning and taking their lumps. Every game there has been growth both on the field on and the sideline.

After this game FCWEH will probably look to leave the LSC and play in whatever poop confernce North, yet very far south, American and Panhandlers on the side of highways State plays in so they can continue to amass a winning record and back their way into future playoffs.

I miss not having Mules football so much that I'm willing to pull for any MIAA team playing games, even the deranged monkeys. Go Gorillas (ouch).

What's the story behind Pittsburg State choosing Gorillas for their nickname?

            This is the true answer.

The official answer goes like this (pasted from Pitt State's website):
It all dates back to October of 1920 and student named Harold "Babe" Alyea. Now, "Babe" wasn't just any student, he was an all-conference center on our basketball team, a member of the track & field team, and a yell-leader. The "Babe" was filled with school spirit, so much so that he founded an all-male pep squad whose members called themselves the Gorillas. At that time the term "gorilla" was also used to describe a rowdy group.
These Gorillas weren't just rowdy, they were also supportive of our athletic teams. The Gorillas helped sell season tickets, arranged trains for fans to ride to out-of-town games, planned pep-rallies and even raised funds and helped construct Carnie Smith Stadium.

On January 15, 1925 the student body, perhaps so impressed with the group's spirit, voted to use the gorilla as a name and mascot for all of our athletic teams. (Our university didn't have an official mascot prior to this time.)

While there wasn't an official mascot prior to 1925, the teams had been unofficially referred to as Roughnecks for a few years prior to that. When it was put to an official vote in 1925, the students preferred Gorillas to Roughnecks.

Pittsburg HS is the Purple Dragons. That isn't a reference to the typical monster of medieval lore. SEK had a robust coal mining economy from about 1890-1920. That's a reference to a mythical monster that the coal miners' wives told their young children lurked in and around coal mines to keep the kids from wandering off and going close to the dangerous mines.
