  • Game 1: Pitt State vs Ferris State

    Opening with defending National Champs.
Hope the new offense is ready!

  • #2
Pitt is breaking in a new QB, RB, OC, OL coach, and O system. Ferris is still Ferris.

I think it depends on how far along the Pitt front 7 is at this point. If they're rolling, Pitt might hang around and force a rock fight. If not, Ferris could win big.

A little pre-season sand bagging? Last time we came there you were braking in a new OC and you guys beat us. You guys full of SEC and BIG12 transfers?

        No sandbagging here.

Front 7 should be good. WR should be really good. TE will be really good, but more old school hammer type TEs. No 6'-7 one handed catch machines. Just 7 bangers. TE Niggeman will get some snaps at QB as long as he isn't dinged up like last year.

DBs are crazy young. (I'm less worried about that position, as Pitt has seemed to really reload at that spot year after year, but there msy be some growingpainsthere early.)

OL has experience, but not as starters.

O scheme is kind of an unknown, other than we expect it to be Multiple.

QB battle is still going on, but most of us expect to see more than one QB. RB corps is basically all new, but one was 3rd in the conf in yardage at Emporia last year, so we have high hopes for him and a couple of others.

Most of us think Pitt traded up at OC and at OL coach, so we're hopeful, but who knows?

Kickers are proven, will have to break in new long snappers, and K/P returners.

Man I hope we're as good as that sounds. Regardless, I think this is still anyone's game at this point. Pitt always seems fired up and all out the first couple of weeks and then they tend to have their share of falloff mid season and get a second wind later. Ferris is tough any time. I believe the regular season series is tied at 1 each. So, this has been a great rivalry building thus far. And sure as heck is more fun than just walking all over the cupcakes we used to open the season with.

By the time we got hammered by Harding, weren't we starting 2 true frosh DBs last year? I feel like they're young, but experienced and played pretty well against the types of offenses they'll see week-in-and-week-out in the MIAA.

I expect Ferris to be the most talented team we'll see all year. They'll make their share of mistakes and, if we capitalize on those mistakes, we have a solid shot at a win. Need at least 3 turnovers.

We did have two true frosh playing tons of minutes late in the season. Even starting. A CB and a Safety(Kirby and Minor). One had a scoop and score in the MIAA championship game last year. We have gotten bigger on the DL, but they are green.... LB should be a strength, Blake Carr, Zack Coenen, Billy Wolfe.

LB is exciting. There's a true frosh who I hear is an absolute killer. There's also a legacy RS who I have high hopes for. I wonder if either will see snaps.

I think we'll be solid, if not dominant on defense. It's TA's calling card. I think the offense is in great hands with Mark Smith, who I really enjoyed watching as a QB around 20 years ago, but I expect some early struggles to get his system implemented and identifying the QB and RBs to pull the trigger.

I expect the O system to be more physical. Ferris in week 0 is a great way to learn how far they have to go to get there.

                        We're plum full of unknowns..
Besides the usual home field crap, we may have two minor advantages.
1- Our new OC. Your staff has little to scout. His dad was a pretty darn successful high school coach. (Maybe .800 win percentage?) Ya gotta figure that counts for something.
2- The heat. Hope y'all have been payin' your dues on heat conditioning. It's awful this time of year if you haven't.

Speaking of heat.. If you're making the trip down... A hearty welcome to the jungle. Get well hydrated before you walk in. I've seen times during hot games with big crowds the concessions will sell out of water .

That said ... Ferris by 10. And Lord have mercy on the rest of the GLIAC if we pull it off.

Any new intel or word about the Pitt QB spot..?

I'm kinda guessing maybe Carson Trimble..since he saw game reps last season, although briefly. I see Jake Wolff is mentioned first here on this link.

The following is based on a complete WAG and contains absolutely zero inside knowledge...

Based on skillsets, I think we may see Pitt use more than 1.

Of the 4 still in the hunt there are 2 with the potential to be dangerous runners and decent passers, one gunslinger/Pocket guy, and one who is more of a passer with the ability to run a little.

My personal hope is That Bobby Bacon plays a lot, but only because I can see some awesome signage and fun chant opportunities. :)

With Smith in full control instead of just influencing the O, I expect to see more creativity overall. We saw a little of it last year with TEs lining up all over, more motion, and PA passing. Not sure if there will be growing pains, but man did they ever pick a tough staff to have him take his maiden college OC voyage against.

Also, Trimble was used as more of a slash player last year. A little wildcat QB, a little WR, a little RB.

He was listed as athlete on the Pitt roster until about halfway through the QB battle this season, so he must have impressed someone??
