APU Football Claims Sixth Consecutive Academic Title

AZUSA, Calif. -- Led by a league-high 17 players who earned selection to the individual all-academic team last fall, Azusa Pacific's football team claimed its sixth consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference academic team championship with a 2.89 team GPA, highest among the conference's five football programs.

The Cougars have claimed the team academic title all six years of its membership in the GNAC, adding three football regular-season championships (2013, 2014, 2016) to lead the league in conference titles both on the field and in the classroom since joining the GNAC in 2012.

Sophomore long snapper Carter Kragero was honored for his academic performance with his second consecutive GNAC Faculty Athletic Representatives Scholar-Athlete Award, which recognizes GNAC student-athletes who compile a cumulative GPA of 3.85 or better. Kragero, a finance major with a 3.98 cumulative GPA, was also selected to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team last fall.

"You'll hear a lot of people talk about success, but our university and athletic department are about accomplishing it," Azusa Pacific football head coach Victor Santa Cruz said. "This sixth consecutive team award highlights the everyday efforts of our administration, along with our student-athletes' push to always get better. As we get set for fall camp in just a few weeks, this award helps us set the bar of expectation for the upcoming year."

While claiming the GNAC academic team championship spanning all six years of its conference membership, Azusa Pacific has produced six of the top seven football team GPAs in the 17-year history of the GNAC team academic award. Kragero is the third Azusa Pacific player to earn the GNAC FAR Award, and he becomes the Cougars' first two-time recipient of the honor.
