  • CWU Recruiting 2021

Who is excited for the 2020 season? But how about the 2021 season? Some high school students are still in their junior year but are already receiving offers to play for CWU! Central just offered a large group of juniors including 4 from Oregon and 1 even from Peoria, AZ! The top player on the list is Camas All-State running back Jacques Badolato-Birdsell, ranked #17 in the state's class of 2021 by 247 Sports, and the #33 overall player in the state by Scorebook Live. He also holds FCS offers from Portland State and Georgetown. Another top player is Kamiakin WR Woodley Downardhttps://www.hudl.com/video/3/9497308...25110c70b8143ahttps://www.columbian.com/news/2019/...amas-to-title/

Glad to see they're looking at eastern Washington more.

Agreed. I'd like to see some from the Big 9, but I do see two from the Tri-Cities and one as a 3* player. I'm a little surprised a player over here can be a 3* athlete in the state as they are rarely on the all state teams. I see that CWU also went closer to the Portland area too with both West Linn, Reynolds, Aloha, and Camas as well as a player in the Eugene area..

The All-State teams are based solely on stats. The stars are based on projected college potential. I notice those two rarely relate to each other. And yeah nice to see them recruiting heavily out of Oregon. Starting a turf war with the Wolves!

CWU showing some ambition to look down to Cali to offer Oaks Christian OG Kekoa Pele-Allen who currently only holds 2 Big Sky offers, though one is to Cal Poly. Also offered the #2 ranked recruit in Idaho in 6'5" TE/DE Ammon Munyer who already holds 2 Big Sky offers including Montana. Went down to Sin City to offer Vegas product TE/DE Tanner Vaughan, and out to Hawaii to offer linemen Gareth Warren and Kaysen Mahuka-Kaawa. This makes 23 total offers known on Twitter which is super unusual for this early in the recruiting season.

Spending out-of-state money on coveted scholarships to get kids from Oregon when you could get the exact kid or better most likely in the state of Washington is weird recruiting, IMO. While I've always pushed WOU into getting more and more in-state as historically their best players are from there -- Boss, Williams, etc. -- I understand why WOU heads north. The state of Washington has more players and often better prep players than in Oregon. Starting some "turf war" with WOU when you can get probably better players in the Puget Sound area is the definition of insanity. Name a truly great Oregon player who has played for CWU. I can't think of one either.

Oregon and Washington are a part of an exchange and there is reciprocity. Not sure that your argument is appropriate given that fact.

I remember when I was looking at colleges and looking at WOU and PSU, I remember they were part of an undergrad exchange program where I wouldn't have to pay out of state tuition. I think this may be more about CWU expanding their recruiting with aspirations of moving up to D1 someday

I don't see that happening. Even if CWU tripled the athletic budget, we would be the lowest in the Big Sky. Never mind the facility upgrades that would be necessary.

Look at the problems EWU is having in that regard.

Not quite, it's the Western Undergraduate Exchange, a lot of schools have it, and it waives not all of out-of-state, by like 1/2 of it. I knew a Seattle kid who got on it, went to WOU, still cost him a lot of dough. It's still a good deal, but not a complete out-of-state waiver. Still cheaper to go to school in your native state.

Eastern Oregon University used to have no out-of-state for anyone, now it's no out-of-state for Washington and Idaho residents. Now that's a really good deal. IMO, more kids from rural Washington and Idaho should use this and go to EOU, small town, small school, it's a good fit for them.

????? I don't see CWU going D-1, which metro area would support this cause as in many boosters and companies? EWU is supported by Spokane, and even they are in massive debt, I mean huge debt, school-crushing debt. Idaho has been some form of D-1/I-AA forever and they are in debt. Montana has the largest drop of enrollment of any school in America, they've lost 6K students in the last decade or more. (Montana State is thriving.) I've long talked about Idaho State's woes, again like Idaho, huge drops in enrollment and increase in debt, particularly athletic debt. Portland State has contemplated dropping football (again) because of that word again ... debt. Paying coaches 6-figures in D-1 is very expensive. Sac State still plays in a 1,300-seat hoops arena and is ... yes, in debt. I don't think chasing D-1 membership would be good deal for CWU. Why not become Grand Valley State in D2 and try to win national titles?

There is more than teh WUE. There are also tuition waivers available. My daughter was a recipient of such a waiver. It isn't at all like you think it is.

As well, I think the CWU staff know what they are doing in this regard.

Your daughter goes to WOU? I was speaking of WOU. Their primary way of aiding out-of-state students is through the WUE, there's not a lot of tuition waiviers from what I've heard. But maybe your daughter got one of those from WOU.

Sorry, she didn't go to WOU. She got a tuition waiver at an out of state school.

My point is that the CWU football staff isn't going to pursue an out of state kid and use more scholly funds than they need to use.

My daughter was a finalist for an asst T&F job at WOU a few years back. She didn't get the job, then took a job at a WA HS and won back-to-back titles in XC and one in track. She left coaching to pursue another career, and is now a marketing exec for a larger CU.

Thanks for the update, sounds like she would've been a great addition to our track and field/cross country staff.
