  • 2010's All-Decade Teams

    https://www.facebook.com/notes/cwu-c...5169689597165/

In the basketball forums I recently shared my GNAC Men's Basketball 2010's All-Decade Teams. So I thought I might as well make one for football, as well. This was a lot more complicated due to the much larger number of players. It took me nearly 3 full days to do this and there were lots of players I couldn't decide where exactly to place. I took into consideration not just stats and awards, but also value to team's successes. I ended up putting 30 players on 1st Team and 34 on 2nd and 3rd Teams each. I couldn't narrow it down beyond that. Tsull, I gave a ton of love to WOU, who had the most selections with 25. So here we go!Totals (1st Team, 2nd Team, 3rd Team)
    • Western Oregon: 25 (7, 8, 10)
    • Central Washington: 22 (8, 7, 7)

    • Azusa Pacific: 16 (7, 4, 5)

Hennessey only played 2 years but had the best 2 years of any QB here, and led CWU to #1 seed in region. Webber had solid 4 year career with 2nd most career yards in GNAC history (behind Mike Reilly). Running backs and receivers are a no-brainer. Duncan was only around for 4 years but he was the most dominant offensive TE, a better receiver than many wide receivers. Included an extra OL to give them a nod for their hard work. Best OL from each of the top 4 schools, but had to give extra love to my Wildcats in this category. On D-line, Akins bounced between end and interior but dominated either with most tacles on any D-lineman. Benthin the best tackle, Sanchez the best pass rusher D-end. Linebackers and DBs pretty obvious. I gave Isaiah Davis slight edge over teammate Ced Chaney. For special teams, GNAC is not know for super effective kickers, but Cacciatore had the best career start to finish. Hall is easy choice for punter, as well as returners Zalk and Revis.

    2nd Team
    • Quarterback:
      • Ryan Bergman (Western Oregon 2011-14): 29 games, 6702 passing yards (231.1/game), 52.8% completions, 58 TD/25 INT, All-GNAC 1st Team & 2nd Team
      • Andrew Elffers (Azusa Pacific 2014-17): 42 games, 5336 passing yards (127.1/game), 61.2% completions, 50 TD/14 INT, 1452 rushing yards, GNAC Offensive Player of Year, 2x All-GNAC 1st Team
      • Mike Proulx (Humboldt State 2008-11): 39 games, 7722 passing yards (198/game), 59.7% completions, 64 TD/29 INT, 2x All-GNAC 1st Team, All-GNAC 2nd Team, All-American 2nd Team

Proulx just missed out on 1st Team and you can make a strong argument for him up there. I guess I didn't want 2 HSU QB's on 1st Team and I am biased toward Hennessey. I know Bergman from growing up so I gave him the extra QB spot on this team. Elffers a great duel threat QB. Wasn't able to lead WOU to a GNAC title, but threw to a NFL receiver! HSU really dished out some great tailbacks, and Racecar Roots has had a solid 2 years with 1 still to go. Williams just missed the cut for 1st Team, but Revis had to be ahead of him, obviously. Simon Fraser also makes a splash with the receivers on this list. Self the best 4 year tight end. HSU has the best tailbacks, so they need to OL recognition here. Goossen one of SFU's few bright spots on the line, and Gonzales finishing his career on a great note. Greer had a big sophomore year didn't make 1st Team since he was really a 3 year contributor with a quiet junior season. I gave Muti the edge over teammate Jason Schwartz because I cannot leave such a good D-tackle off this 2nd Team. Speaking of tackles who can tackle, WOU has another in Swartzlender. Remember SFU had another great linebacker before Herdman in Casey Chin. But WOU's Highburger predecessors Foss and Kuenzi highlight the linebackers here. Ced Chaney just missed out of 1st Team in favor of Isaiah Davis. Taliuaki Suliafu not only one of the coolest names, but best safety who can get behind the line of scrimmage. He also just missed 1st Team cut if 1st Team wasn't so stacked. Humboldt State sweeps kicking and punting, Dixie State makes their debut with kick returner Cache Morgan, and Isaiah Davis is back again as punt returner.

    3rd Team:
    • Quarterback:
      • Trent McKinney (South Dakota Mines 2014-15): 21 games, 4203 passing yards (200.1/game), 60.3% completions, 34 TD/11 INT, 1181 rushing yards, GNAC Newcomer of Year, 2x All-GNAC 1st Team
      • Ryan Robertson (Central Washington 2009-12): 37 games, 7091 passing yards (191.7/game), 60.6% completions, 53 TD/33 INT, GNAC Freshman of Year, 2x All-GNAC 2nd Team
      • Griff Robles (Dixie State 2012-13): 22 games, 5096 passing yards (231.6/game), 53.5% completions, 44 TD/22 INT, All-GNAC 1st Team
    • Running Back:
      • Bo Palmer (Simon Fraser 2010-12): 28 games, 2657 rushing yards (94.9/game) 26 TD, All-GNAC 1st Team & 2nd Team, All-American Honorable Mention

McKinney and Robles were both strong 2 year dual threat QBs and Robertson had a decent 4 year career. Who knows where Palmer and Scoby would've finished if they both played 4 years in the GNAC. Though they could've ended up like Todd who got injured his senior year to end a productive 4 year career. Dixie State had some dynamic 2 year receivers and SFU's Kett rounds out a relatively thin group of talent at tight end this past decade in the GNAC. APU had a pair of two really good 2-year linemen that were talented enough for 2nd team if there were not already so many great 3 and 4 year guys up there. Bo Banner I left for 3rd team because he really had one really good senior season, thought it was a great one. Schwartz just missed 2nd team in favor of teammate Ma'ake Muti. The other Herdman brother makes 3rd team. Langlow bounced between safety and linebacker during his incredible 4 years, making him one of the most valuable defenders of anyone on this list. If he stuck to one position he would be 2nd or 1st Team easily. And WOU gets the special teams sweep on this list! Bradt, Anderson, and Gonsalves all just missed out on 2nd Team.

Excellent work, no complaints from me, might have had Haynes as defensive player of the year as he was on good teams, but Herman was excellent.

From a WOU perspective it's easy to see WOU is a defensive-oriented program, and I have no problem with that. Coach Ferguson comes form the defensive side of the ball and that is WOU's strength and where the most talent is located. Dearth of WOU RB's in the last decade, though I think the current guy, Omari Land, is the best one they've had a decade or more.

Tremendous research, thanks for doing this, gets me excited about football this fall.

    * The virus dies outside? Study of 70,000 people showed that one person out of that group contracted Covid-19 outside. Let's kick it off!
