  • GNAC Fall Sports Suspended

Yeah, it happened. No GNAC sports until November 30, effectively suspending GNAC football. They are looking into a potential spring season.

Was this the right call? Or could they have done a conference-only schedule like the Pac-12? Well travel to Texas for the LSC games would've been problematic. But even for a conference-only schedule, the border crossing would be the big issue.

The three Northwest NAIAsNAIA that I think should be division II have moved their football seasons to the spring. That would be the College of Idaho, Southern Oregon, and Eastern Oregon.

Man, it's sad. I enjoyed watching the games much more than either the NFL or the D1 games. Hopefully they can play in the spring and we'll get to experience something different.

If the GNAC did keep the fall sports season, there is a chance the Canadian government would've prohibited Simon Fraser from playing home games in Canada, like they just did with MLB's Toronto Blue Jays, citing travel concerns. I reckon SFU could've played their home football games in Bellingham. Not like Western is using that football stadium anymore!

Can't get across the border, currently.

And I wouldn't want to see them stuck in Bellingham when there classes are supposed to be at SFU. Maybe though it could have helped get back WWU football, but it would have been bad for all the athletes at SFU and how would they handle the volleyball, cross country, and other fall sports.

In a related note, Washington has moved HS football and other fall sports to the spring.

I'm a little confused, it won't be the first or last time. On the 50% rule let's say they had a six-game spring schedule could you not play more than three games and maintain your eligibility? And if you played more than three you lose that year, right?

No it isn't about how many games the athlete plays. It is about how many games the team plays. If the team plays no more than 50% of the sports's maximum games, which is 10 for DII football (not sure if that goes back up to 11 in the spring, or stays at 10 like it is now), it does appear that a team can play up to 5 games in the spring and those games would NOT count toward their eligibility. Someone correct me if I am wrong, because that seems too good to be true.

Got this email from the CWU Athletics Department, with Dr. Dennis Francois discussing the athletics situation.

NCAA DII should postpone fall sports until spring. But if they do not, then at least offer an official spring season with playoffs. If there is no official spring NCAA football season, then at least hopefully they can play a small exhibition season of games vs. GNAC and NAIA/D3 teams and allow players to not lose eligibility

NCAA D3 just canceled fall sports. Is D2 next?

D3/NWC moved all fall sports to the spring a few weeks ago. I said a month ago there would be no championships this year and I stick by that. They're not having the D2 and D3 football playoffs in the spring. Maybe some games, but people aren't putting all their teams, football, XC, etc., all on planes this spring.

Can we FINALLY accept that there's no national championships this year? Let's live with it.
