Many of the documents signed before medical procedures state specific risks and therefore protects medical professionals should one of those circumstances take place. However, IF negligence can be PROVEN, then malpractice will settle out of court. But the award is usually not nearly as much as people expect. And then it is usually equally allocated as follows.....1/3 to your attorney, 1/3 for healthcare costs, 1/3 to you.

Our legal system SUCKS and takes way too long to settle legitimate cases.

Best of luck Chip. Wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy & healthy New Year.

I'll keep checking this thread to see how you are doing. I really have been wondering why I had not seen you posting in the OT and hoping you were okay.
Thanks for the good will, Michael. It's ironic when a busy, involved person's life becomes focused on not getting constipated (a condition you do not want when you are incontinent).

                Thanks for asking, Joe.

I'm slowly progressing. With PT I'm getting stronger. But it's slow going. I'm getting more feeling returning each week. Today I had PT. The therapist did a sensory test. I could feel her fingers on my left toes and the inside calf. 6 weeks ago it would have been nothing. My right foot and leg are better than the left. However, as an example of how far away from a complete recovery I am, Sat night I awakened at 3am with terrible pain in the scrotum area toward the perineum and up into my torso. Hell, I was crying it was so severe. I called my wife (by phone) in the master bedroom. She hurried in and founnd my right leg on the bedroom floor, twisted in an unnatural position. The muscle spasms during the night had flip-flopped the damn leg right off the bed. The pain subsided when she put the leg back on the bed. I did not feel the leg leave the bed.

But hey, I finally got me some velcro seamed wheelchair pants that my nurses can get me into using the hoyer to drop me down into them, like a clamshell. I'm planning on making it to a couple WT BB games in Feb via the wheelchair-capable community van service. Things could be a lot worse. I do feel a bit like a prisoner in my own house........... I'm ready to get out and gogogo, like before!

I'm paying a company for about 50 hours week of care, $1,100 a week. I'm just so grateful I can afford it. My wife can't hardly help. She's weak with severe RA and a condition called lower limb dystonia. I worry more about her than I do me.

Progress is slow. Emphasize on progress.

                Again, I appreciate the concern!

I am glad you are progressing. I wake up occasionally with a leg off the bed. Luckily, our current bedroom furniture is this horrific stuff my wife chose which is very close to the floor. Between that and cramps which cause me problems at night, I can relate to sleep issues due to neuropathic legs

                    • :crying:Hey BC,

I hope you have stayed clear of the COVID during these past few months. I have continued to keep you in my thoughts and prayers, more so when I thought about WT BB and SB being cancelled.

I hope that you have been able to get continued, safe, home care and PT and continue to progress.

I am sure that it has been a challenging time from a business standpoint as well.

My best wishes for your good health and continued progress.

Thanks for the thoughts, Joe. I appreciate it.

I'm doing okay. My PT stopped two weeks ago thanks to Medicare rules/protocols. The plan is to pick it up again in a a couple of months. In the meantime, I and my daily care providers are doing what exercises we can. Without my Therapist I am unable to sit up on the side of the bed and do exercises that are core-strengthening oriented.

I was able to raise my legs 3 to 4 inches up off the bed, move them to the left and right (reposition them at night), all kinds of good things. Regaining additional feeling. Good progress, but slow progress. My goal is to be able to swing my legs off of the side of the bed and sit up on the side of the bed A YEAR FROM NOW! Meantime, It's the Hoyer and help to get up or down.

I had a recent setback. Two weeks ago yesterday, we got me up and into my power chair and headed for the theater. Somehow the back angle on my chair had been changed causing me to slide forward. I started slipping out of the chair. I panicked, turned around and headed back to the bedroom. My care giver panicked, quickly following me with the Hoyer By the time we got to the bedroom (to put me back in bed), I slid out of the wheelchair onto the floor. My left leg was hyperextended, compressed, and folded up underneath me. I was still pinned down by the chair. 911 was called. Paramedics arrived in about 10 minutes and got the wheelchair off of me. Blood from my foot was everywhere. They thought I had a couple broken left toes. They rolled me back onto my sling. The Hoyer lifted me from the floor onto the gurney and away we went to the ER.

A few hours later, X-Rays were negative for broken toes. Lost 2 toenails and had 6 sutures on one toe and 4 on another. Had a great ER trauma specialist take care of me. What a Doc!!! My Therapist head guy just happened to see me the next day at home for the final evaluation before cutting me loose. The knee, ankle, foot, were swollen swollen. PT said I was lucky I didn't break my ankle. He determined I had a severely strained set of quads and an MCL sprain. 4 weeks to heal. It has set me back on doing my PT. Oh, well.

I'm coming up on 9 months paralyzed. As my feeling has slowly returned, so my difficulty with the Foley (urethral catheter for anyone reading this). With an enlarged prostate, it's like sitting on a damned still rod up my ass. I saw my urologist. He suggested a supra pubic catheter. I whole-heartedly agreed. The CT showed close incursion of intestines to the bladder. So, instead of an outpatient procedure, a hospital radiologist will have to guide a steel wire (under CT scan) through the abdomen into the bladder, avoiding intestines, before the urologist can insert the catheter. One night in the hospital. Crap!

Cardiac clearance needed. Stress test done. Echocardiogram on the 24th. I will be ecstatic to say goodbye to Mr. Foley! Soon, I hope.

Once I get the catheter thing resolved (enabling me to sit in the power chair for more extended periods of time), we'll begin shopping for a mobility vehicle. I'm enamored with the pick-ups/SUVs converted by AT Conversions. Gull wing doors! Pretty damn cool! atconversions.com. Have you seen one?

Other than all that.........waiting for fall sports to start. Texting and emailing various coaches I know. Anxious to see the Buffs compete.. I predict the FB team will win 9 games or more. VB will make it to the regional finals. Women's BB will be an Elite 8 team. Men's BB will bring home the NC!!!

Could be an exciting year to be a Buff!

                              • Hey BC...so sorry about the fall. I am proud of the way you have worked to progress...it is an inspiration. A few years I was advised to look at conversion vehicles, as I cannot feel my feet on the pedals, and my condition is progressive. I have to admit, I have ben in denial on that issue. Thanks for the comment about the AT Conversions...I will look into them. I am considering a new vehicle, as my daughter just totaled hers. I can give her my paid off VW sedan, and will probably look at an F 150, as they are easily adaptable to hand control. I won't need to full WC access, just the adaptive hand controls. Thinking of you, and praying for more progress soon.
