GWB, I had been following local (WT, UTPB, Angelo) recruiting until the beginning of the year. I know that there was a severe drop-off in offers/commits to WT from the 806 and 432 area codes this year. Not sure what the reasoning is, but they just didn't recruit or didn't find what they were looking for locally. I know lots of local kids were looking for WT to recruit them, but it never materialized. Guess they aren't interested in Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland, Odessa, or San Angelo area athletes. Several kids I know opted for other D2, D3 and in some cases FCS schools instead of waiting around for WT. I know it left a sour feeling with at least two (different) HS coaches.

Nice Stadium and you see it helped as Cy Fair win a State Championship in 2017. My Mother in Law graduated from Cypress-Fairbanks. They had a whopping 53 students in her senior class.

These numbers aren't going to change playing CUSA teams which will draw even less interest than their old SLC rivals. Its a commuter school and a ghost town every weekend. Only folks not departing Huntsville come Friday afternoon are those incarcerated at the state pen.

All that being said, I wish them the best but this has the makings of a titanic failure.
My son was at SHSU. And as I said....their tailgate was PACKED and off the hook. But as you say, almost NO ONE went to the games.

I agree with ASUPops that their tailgate is fantastic. I only live 30 miles from Huntsville now so I am able to go to the games. So much so that my step daughter is showing more interest in SHSU than TAMUCC.

Real test for attendance is going to be when they are no longer the top dog in a true playoff format like FCS and are finishing 6-5, 5-6, etc. to schools like UTEP, Liberty, and Louisiana Tech hoping to play in the New Mexico bowl.

I suspect there will be a couple of "Ohio State's" on the schedule to help with costs.

The D2 to FCS jump is more understandable since you still have a traditional football playoff format in FCS but also gain the rest of the D1 perks and teams in their playoff format as well.

It's hard to justify, although I would like to see WT do it. But that would mean increases in ticker prices, donor contributions and student fees (if that is possible).

As far as WT football attendance, I agree. With C9VID everything is off. But, college football attendance has been on the decline at all levels. Even Alabama.

IMO, Hughes MUST win the LSC Championship. No more "or's"(i.e.win OR at least make the play-offs).

If WT wants a CHAMPIONSHIP level football program, they need a blue-chip, blockbuster coach (like a Colby Carthel). And that apparently is not Hughes.
WT should at minimum make the playoffs just because of attrition in the LSC (Tarleton, ACU, and Commerce since the last time WT made the playoffs). Central Washington will be a quality replacement for Commerce.

It will come down to going through the LSC with only one loss however thats not guaranteed (see Midwestern State last year).
