I would whole-heartedly agree. Lynn has turned difficult situations into winning programs. Let's be brutally honest here. Portales, NM is not Stephenville (then LSC) or Wichita Falls or Amarillo/Canyon. I've never been to Kearney, but I imagine it had its location challenges as well.Originally posted by Predatory Primates View Post
I would consider what Lynn did at Kearney to be more than somewhat successful.
At WT, Lynn will have premier facilities and full funding. All the tools are in place. Amarillo/Canyon is not DFW or Austin. But, it's not Portales, NM either.

Time will tell. I think Lynn will be good, but we all also thought Hughes would be good. The difference is, Lynn has been a somewhat successful head coach.
Think back to 2017, Hughes' first year. So much excitement after beating Pueblo. Hughes bragged about making great halftime adjustments and even complimented Ben Arbuckle, whom he kept on the bench most of the year while playing a guy who could not pass or run particularly well. Ben, now the OC at Washington State, quit the team at the end of the year while Hughes brought in Mitch of the Walking Dead the next year. He was going to be great!

Result: 3-8. However we were sure Hughes was on the right track, even though Nesbitt didn't have any losing seasons.
Irrational exuberance...

An honest, realistic HC who gets me to buy in by his actions. Having goals and aspirations to be the BEST, with a 5 year plan to get there is what I want.Originally posted by BuffaloChip View Post
I'd rather have a new head coach come in and set a high aspirational bar. It'd be easy for new guy to say "we'd like to be a consistent winning program."

That's a silly question. Why are you asking me that?
I don't hear 1st year HC's state they were going to be a perennial top 10 powerhouse.
Hyping the Alum to donate more money and support your program is one thing. Promising a powerhouse perennial power is another. Those type of "Used Car Salesmen" statements are concerning to me. They can be job suicide.
I hope he can deliver that top 10 perennial powerhouse team.

The Pitt coach promised to work hard. In a blue collar area, it was about the best promise he could make as far as locals are concerned.Originally posted by ASUPops View Post

Have you ever heard a head coach his first year tell the fans and alumni base "my goal is to just keep the program above water, graduate kids, and just play average football during my tenure"?

I think Hughes could probably be a decent coordinator, but I don't think he should ever be a head coach again. Is he a good person? I think so.Originally posted by Buffalo/Islander Alum View Post
Yeah I felt bad for Hughes.
Just when you thought he was going to turn the corner the team would regress.
I hope he gets a second chance somewhere else.
Its still frustrating to me that it took a blowout Simon Fraser loss to get him out.
I still believe 100% he would have still been the head coach with a 1 point overtime win.
I think if the Simon Fraser game had been a close loss he would still be coaching at WT. Instead it was a train wreck. The team quit on him and the equipment managers sent the wrong jerseys causing WT to be penalized at the start of each half. Hughes was let go at least a year too late.
The AD is more interested in the Whatchamacallit award than the football team. Maybe he can add lacrosse and mud wrestling and get some extra points for those sports.

I don't think it was the game plan. I gather Hughes turned against the team and the team responded by turning against him. He lost the team's respect. A failure of leadership.Originally posted by Buffalo/Islander Alum View Post
To be fair the bar was not only set low but in the negative losing to ENMU and Simon Fraser the last two games.
I think some of the poorer 2A coaches around the panhandle could have game planned better for those last two games.

Sure. But, when you hear it from Lynn, you believe it. He doesn't hype it. He says it matter-of-factly. The confidence is solid. You'd have to meet the guy to understand what I'm saying.Originally posted by Buffalo/Islander Alum View Post

It's going to certainly be an interesting 2023 for Buff FB fans. Hopefully, an exciting season coming off of the Hughes era. A winning year would be a good season 1.

So, it sounds like you are expecting a championship football program now at WT. Something it has never had in it's history. Interesting.
Have you seen many football facilities? There are some really nice ones out there.
Do you have any renderings and timeline for these new WT football facilities?
